Key words effective collaborative strategic reading (CSR) reading comprehension conventional teaching reading activities This study was conducted to investigate whether the students who are taught using collaborative strategic reading (CSR) score significantly better in reading comprehension achievement than those who are taught using conventional teaching reading activities. The problem of the study is Do students who are taught using collaborative strategic reading (CSR) score significantly better in reading comprehension achievement than those who are taught using conventional teaching reading activities as tentative answer to problem stated above the hypothesis for this study stated a null hypothesis (Ho). The null hypothesis was formulated as follows Students who are taught by collaborative strategic reading (CSR) do not score significantly better in reading comprehension achievement than those who are taught using conventional teaching reading activities . The design of the study was quasi-experimental with non-randomized pretest-posttest control group. The samples of this study were taken from the population of the fourth semester students of PGSD (Primary Teacher Training Programme) Institute for Islamic Studies Latifah Mubarrokiyah Suryalaya in the 2009/2010 academic year. The population was relatively large there were three classes class A was 30 students class B was 26 students and class C was 32 students. In the present study the cluster random sampling technique was done since the population was too large. The cluster random sampling in the study was taken by using lottery. The lottery was done toward the three groups of the population. Hence basically each of the groups had the same possibility to be the sample of the research and the result of lottery showed that class B was chosen as the experimental group and class A as the control group. In collecting data the instrument was in the form of short answer test which covered the subject of matter of reading comprehension. Both of the experimental and control groups were given pretest the experimental group was then taught reading comprehension using collaborative strategic reading (CSR) .Meanwhile control group was taught with conventional teaching reading activities. After that both groups were given a posttest which was also used as the pretest. The data gained through pretest and posttest were analyzed statistically by using independent t-test. T-test analysis in pretest reveal that t-value for df 54 is 3.180 is greater than t-table (2.0105) at the level of significance of 0.05 for a two tailed test (t-value 3.180 t-table 2.0105). This indicates that the subjects of experimental and control groups have significantly different before the experiment in their pretest scores of reading comprehension test. Based on the statistical computation for posttest using independent t-test it is reveal that t-value for df 54 is 3.466 is greater than t-table (2.0105) at the significance of 0.05 for a two tailed test (t-value 3.466 t-table 2.0105). This indicates that there is a significant difference means scores between students who are taught using collaborative strategic reading (CSR) and those who are taught using conventional teaching reading activities. Based on the result of research findings it can be concluded that collaborative strategic reading (CSR) given to the experimental group is proved to be effective in increasing students reading comprehension achievement. Thus it is suggested that English teacher/ instructor utilize collaborative strategic reading (CSR) in the teaching of reading comprehension. Besides for future study it is suggested to use other instrument such as questionnaire and interview to get the data on students responses toward the implementation of collaborative strategic reading (CSR) the experiment study related to collaborative strategic reading (CSR) can be conducted to different academic levels of students for example students of junior high school. Moreover the findings of this research had provided the basis for future research in the same area.
