Abstract

Key Words QAR strategy reading comprehension skills. Reading is one of the four language skills that should be mastered in language learning. It is usually taught in integration with one of the other language skills (listening speaking and writing) in the new trends of language instruction. Generally the teaching of reading as a foreign language (EFL reading) in Indonesia aims at enabling students to read and comprehend texts and other materials written in English. More specifically students are expected to master skills in the levels of literal inferential and evaluational comprehension. Unfortunately Indonesian students are still lack of skills in reading comprehension. The results of the preliminary study conducted at English Department of Kanjuruhan University Malang shows that students in this institution got difficulties in answering questions related to English texts given to them. Besides the students average score of reading achievements conducted in the preliminary study was 59.00.Furthermore from informal interviews with English lecturers of the English Department it was found that in general students had low skills in comprehending English texts and had low participation in the teaching-learning process. This study was conducted to overcome the students difficulties in reading comprehension and encourage students to actively participate in the teaching-learning process through Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy. This strategy offers four levels of questions (i.e. Right There Think and Search Author and Me and On My Own) to help students answer each level of questions. This strategy comprises three phases prereading during-reading and post reading activities. It is applicable for teaching reading comprehension since it can help and guide the students in comprehending a text well based on the levels of questions. This study was designed for collaborative classroom action research in which the researcher (acted as the teacher) and his collaborator (acted as the observer) worked together with him on the procedures of the study namely preliminary study planning implementing the plan observing the action and reflecting the result of the action. The subjects of the study were 30 students of Class A of the second semester who took Reading Comprehension II class in the academic year 2009/2010 at English Department of Kanjuruhan University Malang. For data collection this study employed observation checklist field notes and test. All the data were analyzed descriptively and the results of the analysis were compared with the criteria of success determined in this study to see whether the criteria of success had been achieved or not. The findings of the research that were conducted in two cycles showed that QAR strategy was worthy to improve the students reading skills especially critical and scanning skills and activate students to participate in the teaching-learning process of reading. The students average score developed significantly from 59.00 in the preliminary study to 71.33(equal to 20.89%) in Cycle 1. It developed to 74.33 (equal to 25.98%) in Cycle 2 in the scale of 0 100. The total numbers of the students who got score 8805 70 in the preliminary study developed from 7 (equal to 23.33%) to 17 (equal to56.67%) out of 30 students in the Cycle 1. It developed to 24 (equal to 80.00%) in Cycle 2. Moreover the findings of the study also described that this strategy improved the students participation. The students participation was 87.18% (equal to very good) in Cycle 1 and 87.42% (equal to very good) in Cycle 2. On the basis of the findings the research showed that the appropriate procedure of QAR used the following steps (1) dividing the class in groups of three (2) introducing the concept of QAR strategy using a short paragraph (3) modeling and explaining each type of questions using a visual aid (4) activating the students schemata related to the text (5) asking the students to read the text silently (6) asking each group to answer the questions based on the levels of questions (7) asking the groups to show the answers (8) determining the correct answers with the whole class (9) Giving feedback (10) giving conclusion of the benefits of QAR strategy and (11) implementing a test. Related to the research findings some suggestions are addressed to English lecturers chairperson of English department and future researchers. For English lecturers it is suggested that they apply QAR strategy in the teaching learning process of reading since it is able to improve the students skills and the level of participation in the teaching-learning process. The English teachers should also pay attention on the stages of reading prereading during-reading and post reading. Last but not least this strategy should be conducted in groups of three or small groups since the students have an opportunity to work together and help each other. For the chairperson of English department it is suggested that he/she inform the strengths and benefits of QAR strategy in improving the reading comprehension skills of the students to the colleagues. He/she is also suggested to provide facilities to improve the students skills in reading as for the students of universities proficiency in English particularly in reading skill is generally assumed to be essential for a successful study due to the reason that most of good academic textbooks in Indonesia are still written in English. For future researchers it is suggested that they use the findings of this research as a reference in conducting similar studies in reading comprehension using different settings such as levels of the students or difficulties of the reading materials.
