ABSTRACT Wattiheluw Nurlaila. 2010. Improving the Speaking Skill of Second Semester Biology Students of IAIN Ambon Through Information Gap Activities. Thesis Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Nur Mukminatien M.Pd (II) Prof. Kasihani KES. M.A. Ph.D. Key Words speaking skill information gap activities (IGA) This study was designed to improve the second semester of Biology students speaking skill through information gap activities at State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) Ambon. The research problem is How can information gap activities technique be implemented to improve students speaking skill The research design was classroom action research consisting of four stages namely planning the action implementing and observing the action and reflecting on the action. The stages were preceded by a preliminary study to find out the problems in the teaching and learning of speaking. The findings in preliminary study showed that 20 out of 40 students (50%) considered that speaking was the most difficult language skill to master among the four skills. In addition none of 40 students reached the level fair in speaking classification. The appropriate procedures in implementing IGA were (1) put the students into pairs (2) hold up an example of the two sheets and give each pair an A sheet and B sheet (3) distribute the papers (4) write a simple example on the board or display it using slide projector (5) survey students activities during the process of information exchange in order to keep them concentrate on the process and (6) give feedback. The findings of the study indicated that in Cycle 1 the study has not met the criteria of success. Concerning the first criterion 60 % of students reached at least at the level fair speaking performance qualification in fact only 2 students (5%) reached the fair classification. In contrast to the first criterion of success the students responses of teaching speaking using information gap activities technique was given good with the minimum percentage of 75%. Based on to the result of Cycle 1 in which the criteria of success were not meet the researcher had decided to re-plan the next Cycle and the result showed that 34 students (85 %) reached the fair classification or more. Meanwhile students responses to the implementation of the technique was good with the minimum percentage answer to the statement was of 80% and for maximum percentage answer was 97.5%. In conclusion the study had already met the criteria of success and the action was stopped. English lecturers of non-English department students are suggested to utilize the technique in the teaching and learning of speaking skill. The materials that contain Biology major hopefully can be beneficial for future researchers with the same major of the students.
