Key Words comprehension of poems Two Stay-Two Stray Strategy The researcher s experience in teaching college students especially in teaching poetry shows that the ability of the students in comprehending poems is low. Based on the preliminary study that is conducted on 16th of November 2009 the students are unable to comprehend poems well especially in comprehending elements of poem. The result of the preliminary study showed that around 18 (78%) out of 23 students shows low performance in comprehending poems. It was also supported by the average score of student test which was 59.7. The study is directed to improve students comprehension of poems using the Two Stay-Two Stray (henceforth TS-TS) strategy. The subject of this study is 23 students of the sixth semester of English department of FKIP at Islamic University of Malang. To cope of students problem in comprehending of poems and to increase students active involvement during learning process the researcher uses collaborative action research design which consists of four main steps planning implementing observing and reflecting. In gaining the required data this study uses some instruments namely observation checklist field notes and quiz. The gathered data are analyzed and presented quantitatively and qualitatively. The research is conducted from May 18 to June 10 2010 and it is conducted in two cycles that consist of four meetings three meeting for giving treatment and implementing TS-TS strategy. One meeting is used to test students comprehension of poems. The criteria of success of this classroom action research is (1) all students (100%) at least got score 55 in comprehension of poem and the mean score of students test is greater than or equal to 70 (2) at least 65% of the students are active in teaching and learning process The findings indicate that using TS-TS strategy can improve the students comprehension of poems. The average score of the students test in Cycle 1 is 76 and only one student gets score under 55 and the students active involvement in Cycle 1 is 71%. The average score of students test in Cycle 2 is 80 and the students active involvement in Cycle 2 is 86%. The data are obtained from the implementation of TS-TS strategy in improving students comprehension of poems. The procedures of TS-TS strategy are (1) the lecturer activates students background knowledge by asking questions about the elements of poetry (structure and content) (2) the lecturer gives guidances how to identify the elements of poetry in a poem (3) the lecturer divides students into several groups each of which consists of four students (a group should consist of high average and low achiever students) and giving the groups freedom in deciding the leader of group discussion the stayers and strayers (4) The lecturer decides and explains the rules of group discussion orally or in written form (5) the lecturer gives the groups the same poem guided questions answer s sheet and strayers note (6) the lecturer asks the groups to disccuss the poem and complete their work with certain duration of time (7) the lecturer asks two group members (strayers) to leave their home group and stray individually to other groups while the remaining group members ( stayers ) explain what their group has done to the visiting strayers . The strayer s discussion is limited by certain duration of time (8) the lecturer asks the strayers return to their home groups and report what they have got while stayers report on the feedbacks they have received (9) the lecturer asks the groups to revise and complete their work and another round of Stay-Stray can take place with new strayers if the time is enough (10) the lecturer clarifies and discusses the poem that the students have been discussed. During the home group discussion and stray-group discussion the teacher monitors and controls students activities and responds to the students questions. All indicators of criteria of success are achieved however the researcher stops the research only in two cycles. Based on the research findings two suggestions are offered. First for the teachers of literature it is suggested that teachers of literature use this strategy to improve the students comprehension of poems. Second for future researchers they are suggested that they use the research for their references for further research in the same field or other literature subjects.
