Abstract

Key words the PWIM strategy writing skill descriptive paragraphs Writing was a difficult skill for the students at MTs Nahdlatul Wathan 2 Rensing Lombok. It could be seen from the result of the preliminary study which showed that the ability of the second graders of MTs Nahdlatul Wathan 2 Rensing Lombok in writing paragraphs was still poor. The students were unable to express their ideas in a good paragraph. They made a number of mistakes in their writing in terms of content language use and mechanics. To overcome this problem the researcher proposed one of the strategies in teaching of English descriptive writing i.e. the Picture Word Inductive Model Strategy or the PWIM Strategy. The research aimed at improving the ability of the second graders of MTs Nahdlatul Wathan 2 Rensing Lombok in writing descriptive paragraphs using the PWIM Strategy. For the purpose it employed Collaborative Action Research in which both the researcher and his collaborator worked together in planning implementing observing the action and reflecting on the data collected from the teaching and learning process and the students writing products. The subjects of this research were 26 students of the second graders of MTs Nahdlatul Wathan 2 Rensing Lombok in the academic year 2009/2010. The study was conducted in two cycles and each cycle was carried out in four meetings. The instruments used were the writing tasks observation checklist field notes and a set of questionnaires. The reflection was based on the findings of teaching learning processes during the observation and the students final products and the comparison with the criteria of success including (1) the writing tasks the students writing achievement improved ( 8805 75% students of the class achieved the scores greater than or equal to 60 of the range that lies from 0-100) and (2) an observation checklist and field notes the students were actively involved in the ten writing activities. The result of the reflection was used to determine the planning of the next cycle. The findings indicated that using the PWIM Strategy could improve the students ability in writing descriptive paragraphs. After the researcher conducted the first and the second cycles the result showed that the students scores in the first and second cycles improved. In the first cycle there were 8 (31%) students out of 26 students who got scores under the target score 60 meanwhile in the second cycle only 2 out of 26 students (8%) who still received scores under the target score 60. The steps were (1) providing and giving the students colorful pictures of certain objects to construct the students knowledge about descriptive text (2) giving the students a model of descriptive text in which the generic structure of the text are clearly marked (3) asking the students to work in groups to study a descriptive text (4) engaging students to express their idea in brainstorming technique (drawing lines to shake out ideas) (5) modeling the students to spell and pronounce the words/phrases by involving them in the activity (6) guiding the students to explore select and order their ideas (7) asking the students to put down their ideas into sentences and arrange them in a rough draft (8) asking the students to revise their rough drafts by using the revising guidelines format (9) asking the students to exchange their drafts with their peers (10) assigning the students to check the grammar and the mechanics of their writing by making reference to the editing guidelines format (11) asking the students to rewrite their final writing neatly (12) asking the students to read their final product in front of the class in turn. Based on the research findings three suggestions were offered. First for the English teachers it is suggested that teachers use the PWIM strategy in teaching writing skills using the process-writing approach. Second for the school principal it is suggested that the school principal can provide special lesson time for the students practice the English writing continually. Third for the future researchers it is suggested that the future researchers conduct research using the PWIM Strategy with some changes in terms of text types instructional media and the procedures of the presentation of the PWIM Strategy or different skills such as listening speaking and reading.
