ABSTRACT Wiryaningsih Yayuk Khisbiyah. 2009. Improving the Reading Ability of the Eleventh Year Students of MAN Malang I through Small-Group Discussion. Thesis English language Education Graduate Program of State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dra. Hj. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. (2) Dr. Arwijati W. Murdibjono M. Pd Dip. TESL. Key words Improving reading ability Small-Group Discussion From the preliminary study it was found that the result of the reading comprehension of the students of MAN Malang I was still unsatisfactory. The problem was caused by these facts the students vocabulary was low they had trouble with basic reading skills and strategies and the content of the text was not accessible to the students. These facts were caused by the teacher who instructed the students to do the tasks individually in which the activities in small group work were never applied. Dealing with the condition an appropriate strategy was needed to improve the students reading ability. Accordingly with the endeavor of improving the students reading ability a small-group discussion strategy was applied in this study. This study was conducted to improve the reading ability of the students of MAN Malang I through small-group discussion. The problem was How can small-group discussion improve the reading ability of the eleventh year students of MAN Malang I This study utilized a Collaborative Classroom Action Research through the self-reflexive spiral comprising four steps namely planning implementing observing and reflecting. The subjects of the study were the second-semester XI A3 students of MAN Malang I of the 2008/2009 academic year. This study was implemented to 31 students and it was conducted in two cycles where each cycle consisted of two meetings for the teaching and learning process and a meeting for a test. The instruments used to collect the data were observation checklist interview guide field note and reading comprehension tests. The data taken from the two tests were analyzed and presented quantitatively. Meanwhile the data derived from checklists field notes and interview guide were analyzed and presented qualitatively. The findings of this study indicated that the appropriate model of small-group discussion strategy for teaching reading consisted of the following procedures (1) grouping students heterogenously (2) determining the roles for the group s members (3) activating the students background knowledge before reading (4) showing pictures related to the topic (5) connecting the picture with the topic (6) asking the students to work in group (7) asking the students to read the text silently (8) asking the students to discuss the questions and the generic structure of hortatory exposition (9) asking te students to share the answers with the class (10) recalling the content of the text by stating the statements with true or false and (11) writing the results of the discussion. Both the process and product of the teaching and learning were improved by using this strategy. The improvement of the process was indicated with the students positive responses. It was indicated by their interest in the teaching and learning process. They participated actively in learning activities worked cooperatively in doing the tasks and were involved actively in sharing ideas debating asking and answering the questions during the discussion. Meanwhile the improvement of the students reading ability was indicated by both the increasing mean score and the number of students who obtained scores equal to or greater than 70. The mean score increased from 60.97 in the Preliminary study to 68.55 in Cycle 1 and 73.87 in Cycle 2. The number of the students getting higher scores increased from 15 students (48%) in Cycle 1 to 24 students (74%) in Cycle 2. Based on the findings some suggestions are addressed to the English teachers and the future researchers. It is recommended that the English teachers who have similar problems in reading class apply small-group discussion to improve their students reading ability by following the given strategy. For future researchers it is recommended that further research by using small-group discussion strategy be applied in the other skills such as in speaking or writing. They can also apply small-group discussion strategy to teach not only hortatory exposition but also the other text types namely spoof report or others. The strategy might be implemented in different levels at twelveth year or tenth year to investigate the effectiveness of the small-group strategy. It is also recommended that future researchers plan the action well prepare the lesson plan and the student s worksheet more carefully provide the reading comprehension texts and the instructional media appropriately socialize the strategy to the subjects and the collaborator before conducting the action and create good relationship with the subjects.
