Abstract

ABSTRACT Huda Miftahul. 2009. Improving the Speaking Skill of Grade VIII Students of MTs Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo through Information Gap Activities. Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Education the State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti Dip.TESL. M.Pd (2) Dr. Yazid Basthomi M.A. Keywords speaking skill information gap activities find your friend strategy Speaking is one of the four language skills that must be mastered by Indonesian students who are learning English as a foreign language. However the preliminary study that the researcher carried out toward the Grade VIII students of MTs Nurul Jadid Paiton Probolinggo in December 2008 showed that they scored 52 point for the speaking skill i.e. thirteen points lower than the predetermined minimum passing grade of 65 indicating that they still had poor English oral proficiency. This study was therefore conducted to improve the students speaking skill through information gap activities called Find your Friend Strategy. The study employed collaborative Classroom Action Research (CAR) in which the researcher and a teacher-collaborator worked as a team in carrying out the cyclical procedure of the study planning implementing observing and reflecting on the action. The research which took two cycles was conducted in a class of twenty students. Through the implementation of the action the students were supposed to reach the predetermined criteria of success those are (1) every student gets a minimum score of 65 and (2) 75% of the class has positive attitude toward the information gap activities. The data on the two aspects were collected through several instruments i.e. interaction task and oral presentation tests questionnaire and fieldnotes. The findings of this study revealed that the information gap activities successfully improved the students speaking skill as their final scores exceeded 65. With the lowest score of 66 and the highest one of 87 the students were regarded to have fair to good speaking ability and that they in general could produce effective communication with quite good range of vocabulary and occasional grammar slips. Besides instead of 75% of the students all of them (100%) had favorable attitude toward the activities. The information assembled from the questionnaire demonstrated that the activities were pleasing and useful for he students in improving their speaking skill in the way that the activities offered wide opportunity for speaking. The students felt that the activities could raise their self-confidence enrich their vocabulary and improve their grammatical mastery. They also gave positive response on the use of the media and support on the application of the activities in future teaching of speaking. As this study suggests the information gap activities are effectively implemented through the following procedure (1) eliciting the students background knowledge on the topic (2) explaining the linguistic features to be used (3) inviting the students either in pair or in group to discuss the typical structure of several spoken expressions (4) grouping the students (5) modeling the activities (6) drilling the students with the pronunciation as well as the meaning of the vocabulary items (7) assigning the students to move around the class ask several questions to their friends and answer their questions and write the result of the conversation (8) asking every student to give individual oral report and (9) giving feedback on the students oral performance. In reference to the result of the study it is recommended that the English teachers apply the information gap activities in the teaching of speaking skill especially in a classroom suffering from low motivation poor proficiency and high degree of anxiety or reluctance. Furthermore it is also suggested that other researchers verify and strengthen the findings of this study by carrying out a research on different subjects setting and design on a particular gap-based-method other than Find your Friend Strategy and on levels of education
