Abstract

ABSTRACT Sa diyah Khalimatus. 2009. Improving the Writing Ability of the Tenth Graders of MAN Batu in Writing Descriptive Texts through Writing-as-a-Process Approach. Thesis. Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (I) Dra. Hj. Utami Widiati M.A. Ph.D. (II) Dr. Sri Rachmajanti Dip. TESL M.Pd. Key words writing-as-a-process approach writing ability descriptive paragraphs This study was designed to develop writing-as-a-process approach to improve the students writing ability. This approach seems to be able to stimulate the students to be more involved in the writing activities so that their writing ability might improve and they might become more motivated because it provides students with guidance during the writing activities through stages in producing a piece of writing. This study employed collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and her collaborative teacher as a research team worked together from the beginning up to the end of this study. This study was focused on the tenth graders (X-D) of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Batu of the 2008/2009 academic year. This class was considered to be the lowest level among the first year parallel classes based on the average score of the students in the mid term and in the pre-test given of the preliminary study. In the preliminary study the students writing problems were identified. Preparations were then carried out in the planning stage. The planning covered preparing writing-as-a-process approach which include three stages of approaching process writing i.e. prewriting (generating ideas) writing (drafting) and rewriting (revising editing and publishing). The preparation also included preparing the teaching materials and media besides deciding the criteria of success. After that the implementation and observation were conducted. It was followed by data analysis. The instruments used to collect data were an observation checklist field notes interview guide and writing tasks. Based on the result of data analysis reflections were then made in order to evaluate whether the findings of the study had met the criteria of success. Through the implementation of the writing-as-a-process approach in two cycles the students writing ability in the process of learning writing and in producing descriptive paragraphs was improved from the first cycle to the second. This was indicated by the improvement of their ability in implementing the prewriting writing and rewriting stages. In the prewriting stage the students were able to generate their ideas in a cluster and organize them into a good order. In the writing stage they were able to write their rough drafts. In the rewriting stage they were able to revise their drafts on content and organization edit their drafts on grammar and mechanics and write in a final writing product. It was also indicated by their average score increasing from 60.35 in the pre-test to 67.85 in the first cycle and to 71.96 in the second cycle. On the basis of the findings some suggestions were posted. First for English teachers who are interested in using writing-as-a-process approach to improve the students writing ability they should group the students in learning to write so that they can help and correct each other since writing-as-a-process approach takes much time they should set the time effectively by considering the length of the time allocated for every task and they should have the students practice the revising and editing activities through the group working before assigning them to revise and edit their own drafts. Second for future researchers who are interested in conducting a similar study it was suggested to explore the applicability of the writing-as-a-process approach with students of different levels as well as of different styles and to carry out some form of experimental studies which are aimed at developing students ability in writing paragraphs using writing-as-a-process approach in order to be able to make generalization across classes and text types.
