Abstract

The objective of this study was to develop a prototype of listening materials for Grade XII students in the first semester. The procedures of the study were conducting needs survey developing materials experts and teacher s validation revision trying out the materials revision and getting the final product. The instruments in needs survey were questionnaires an interview guide and field notes. The result of the needs survey showed that they did not have enough practice for listening comprehension. Most of the students (97.1%) agreed that it was necessary to provide them with listening materials. Based on those findings the listening materials were developed. There were 9 units for the proposed listening materials. Then the proposed materials were sent to the experts and the English teacher to be validated and evaluated. A validation form was used to gain the experts and teacher judgment on the materials. The experts and the teachers validated them on the basis of language content length speeds of delivery quality of the recording and the practicality. The data from the experts and teachers were analyzed qualitatively. The experts and teacher s validation showed that eight units were acceptable and applicable except unit 1. An expert and the teacher considered it too easy. Therefore this unit then was deleted. A review unit was added as the suggestion of the teacher. The try out was conducted from March 4 2008 to March 28 2008. The subject was Grade XII students of Language Program at MAN Jombang. The data from the teacher and observation related to the practicality and effectiveness during try-out were presented qualitatively. The data from the students related to language content length and speeds of delivery and the clarity of the recording were analyzed quantitatively using percentage. The result of the first try out showed that only one unit namely unit 5 needed revising in terms of task. The revision was done by adding written questions and task B was changed from making a summary into arranging the jumble paragraphs based on the oral information. Then the revised units were tried out. The result of the second try out showed that the revised unit was appropriate for the students. The final product was in the form of Audio CD and Cassette a teacher guide book and a student workbook. The CD and Cassette contain the materials to be listened to by the students. The teacher guide contains the direction of how to teach the materials the stages in teaching listening the tape scripts and the answers key. The student workbook contains the tasks which have to be done by the students. For other researchers who are doing a similar study was suggested to develop listening materials for Grades X and XI. For English teachers who are going to use this product was suggested to follow the guide book and vary the expansion activities.
