Graduate Program in English Language Education State University of Malang. Advisors (1) Dr. Johannes Ananto Prayogo M.Pd. M.Ed. (2) Drs. Fachrurrazy M.A. Ph.D. Key words cartoon series improve writing ability narrative text One of the problems of the teaching of writing at MTsN Nganjuk was the ineffective teaching writing activities by the teachers. The English teachers did not make a good planning in teaching writing and they were not accustomed to employing process of writing in their teaching writing. Based on the preliminary study it was found the facts that (1) The students had problems in generating ideas and organizing the text (2) The students had inadequate competence in grammar and vocabulary (3) The students required to practice writing narrative text for they never practiced writing it before. The researcher was greatly motivated to overcome the problems by utilizing cartoon series in the process of writing within four-stage strategy. The statement of the problem is how cartoon series can improve the writing ability of the Grade IX students of MTsN Nganjuk in writing narrative texts. The objective of the study is to describe the strategy of utilizing cartoon series in teaching writing in order to improve the writing ability of the Grade IX students of MTsN Nganjuk in writing narrative texts. The research design employed in this study was Classroom Action Research which consisted of four main steps planning implementing observing and reflecting conducted in two cycles. The study was conducted at Grade IX-E which comprised thirty three students. Observation checklist a set of questionnaires and field notes were used as instruments to collect the data about the involvement and motivation of the students upon the implementation of the strategy. The students drafts were scored on the basis of analytical scoring format for narrative writing adapted from Hill et al. (1998) which assessed aspects of a story such as setting and characters plot theme story conclusion and language components which cover grammar vocabulary and sentence structure. The study was considered successful if it met three criteria. First the degree of the students involvement throughout the implementation of the strategy achieved 75% measured using observation checklist. Second the number of the students who got 65 or more attained 24 students (70%). Third the average score of the students products was at least 65. The findings of the study showed that cartoon series within four-stage strategy and writing process approach was effective in the teaching of writing narrative text. First cartoon series was helpful to generate the students ideas and organize their texts. Second writing process approach encouraged the students with the steps of creating the texts and four-stage strategy was effective in the teaching of writing. Additionally self-access learning brought the students to write narrative text independently. Personal treatment encouraged the students to consult their drafts and it minimized the gap between the teacher and the students. The procedures of implementing cartoon series in the teaching of writing were initiated by BKoF stage i.e. telling a story and rewriting the story. In MoT stage a text was exemplified to be comprehended and analyzed. The process of writing occurred in JCoT stage. Provided with a set of cartoon series the students made an outline developed the draft proofread peer edited and revised the draft. In ICoT stage the students independently accessed their own cartoon series and developed a narrative text. The students proceed this writing process recursively writing draft peer editing the draft revising and writing the final draft. Finally the students drafts were published through reading aloud role playing and displaying them on the wall magazine. It can be inferred therefore that cartoon series is effective for the teaching of writing narrative texts. Cartoon series has inspired the students to generate ideas and also has brought them to organize narrative texts well. Writing process approach keeps the students to do the steps of composing whereas four-stage strategy facilitates the students to do the steps of learning writing collaboratively and independently. It is finally suggested that the teachers of English utilize cartoon series in teaching writing narrative texts. For the students it is expected that they practice writing paragraphs in various topics and texts by utilizing cartoon series available in printed media such as newspapers magazines etc. The other researchers are invited to conduct further research based on the findings of this study to develop better strategies in the teaching of writing.
