Key words recount text writing the question and answer technique This study was carried out based on the problems faced by the researcher as the English teacher at MTs Siti Mariam Banjarmasin. Based on the results of the preliminary study at the grade eight students it showed that the students achievement in writing especially in recount text was still unsatisfactory and the students had low motivation to participate in the writing tasks. To solve the problems the Question and Answer Technique was chosen. Thus this study was designed to investigate how the Question and Answer Technique could improve the ability of the grade eight students of MTs Siti Mariam Banjarmasin in writing recount texts. The study used a collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborative teacher worked together in conducting this study. The researcher acted as the teacher while the English teacher became the observer who observed the implementation of the Question and Answer Technique. This study was conducted in two cycles by following the procedures of the action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each cycle consisted of three meetings. The data of the study were gathered through the following instruments - observation checklist field notes questionnaire and students writing tasks. The subjects of this study were 35 grade eight students of MTs Siti Mariam Banjarmasin of the 2008/2009 academic year. The findings of the study revealed that the Question and Answer Technique could improve the students ability in writing recount texts by guiding them in constructing sentences. In constructing sentences the students were given a series of questions based on certain media (such as timetables picture series and so forth). The complete answers of the questions were then constructed in a certain way to make a well-organized recount text. Furthermore the improvement of the students ability in writing recount texts could be seen from the increase of students average writing score from 52.1 in the first cycle to 70.1 in the second cycle. Besides from the result of observation checklist field notes and questionnaire the findings of this study indicated that the Question and Answer Technique was effective in enhancing the students participation and motivation in the teaching and learning process. In addition the findings of the study revealed the appropriate model of the Question and Answer Technique in the teaching of writing covered the following procedures (1) giving the students the model of recount texts (2) having students read the recount texts and pay attention to vocabulary and sentence structure or language feature of recount texts (3) asking students some questions to ensure that the students have understood about the content and the generic structure of recount text (4) organizing the students into groups (5) distributing to each group of students several copies of the picture series with a list of questions (some questions were related to the topic and the picture series some others were not) (6) assigning the students to select the questions related to the topic and picture series in group (7) assigning the students to answer the selected questions in group (8) assigning the students to arrange their answers to be a recount text individually (9) assigning the students to combine the sentences of their text with the appropriate connectors individually and (10) giving opinion and suggestion to the students to revise and edit their drafts. Based on the above findings it is suggested that the English teachers apply the Question and Answer Technique since it is beneficial in improving the students ability in writing recount text. Moreover to the future researcher particularly those who have the same problems and are interested in applying the Question and Answer Technique in their research it is suggested that they apply the Question and Answer Technique in the same field which is focused on increasing the students creativity and curiosity in writing (creative writing) or in the teaching of other language skills for instance listening and speaking (by having students to listen to an oral monologue for example and then asking them to answer the questions about the monologue orally). Berdasarkan hasil studi awal pada siswa kelas delapan MTs Siti Mariam Banjarmasin diketahui bahwa kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks recount masih kurang memuaskan dan siswa mempunyai motivasi yang rendah untuk berpartisipasi dalam tugas menulis. Teknik Tanya-Jawab dipilih untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan tersebut. Oleh karena itu penelitian ini dirancang untuk mengetahui bagaimana Teknik Tanya-Jawab dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa-siswi kelas delapan MTs Siti Mariam Banjarmasin dalam menulis teks recount. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan penelitian tindakan kelas yang bersifat kolaboratif dimana peneliti dan guru bekerja sama dalam melaksanakan penelitian ini. Peneliti berperan sebagai guru sedangkan guru bahasa Inggris menjadi observer yang mengobservasi pelaksanaan Teknik Tanya-Jawab. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus yang mengacu pada prosedur penelitian tindakan yaitu planning implementing observing dan reflecting. Tiap siklus dalam penelitian ini terdiri dari tiga pertemuan. Data penelitian dikumpulkan melalui beberapa instrumen yaitu ceklis observasi catatan lapangan kuisioner dan tugas-tugas menulis siswa. Subyek penelitian ini adalah 35 siswa kelas delapan MTs Siti Mariam Banjarmasin pada tahun ajaran 2008/2009. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Teknik Tanya-Jawab dapat meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks recount dengan membimbing para siswa dalam membuat kalimat. Dalam membuat kalimat para siswa diberi serangkaian pertanyaan berdasarkan media tertentu (seperti daftar kegiatan gambar berseri dan lain-lain). Jawaban lengkap dari pertanyaan-pertanyaan tersebut kemudian diolah dengan cara tertentu untuk menghasilkan sebuah teks recount yang terorganisasi dengan baik. Lebih lanjut peningkatan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks recount dapat dilihat dari peningkatan nilai rata-rata menulis siswa dari 52 1 di putaran pertama menjadi 70 1 di putaran kedua. Di samping itu dari hasil ceklis observasi catatan lapangan dan kuisioner hasil penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa Teknik Tanya-Jawab sangat efektif dalam meningkatkan partisipasi dan motivasi siswa dalam proses belajar dan mengajar. Terlebih lagi hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa model Teknik Tanya-Jawab yang sesuai dalam pengajaran menulis meliputi prosedur berikut (1) memberikan model teks recount kepada siswa (2) memerintahkan siswa untuk membaca teks recount tersebut dan memperhatikan kosa kata dan tata bahasa atau ciri-ciri kebahasan dari teks recount (3) memberikan pertanyaan yang bertujuan untuk menyakinkan pemahaman siswa tentang isi cerita dan generic structure dari teks recount (4) mengelompokkan siswa (5) mendistribusikan gambar berseri dengan serangkaian pertanyaan (sebagian pertanyaan-pertanyaan itu berhubungan dengan topik dan gambar berseri tersebut sebagian pertanyaan yang lain tidak berhubungan dengan topik dan gambar berseri tersebut) kepada masing-masing kelompok siswa (6) menugaskan siswa untuk memilih pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang berhubungan dengan topik dan gambar berseri tersebut secara berkelompok (7) menugaskan siswa untuk menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan yang telah dipilih secara berkelompok (8) menugaskan siswa untuk menyusun jawaban-jawaban mereka menjadi sebuah teks recount secara individu (9) menugaskan siswa untuk menggabungkan kalimat-kalimat dalam teks recount mereka dengan kata sambung yang sesuai secara individu dan (10) memberi pendapat dan saran kepada siswa untuk merevisi dan mengedit tulisan mereka. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian disarankan kepada guru Bahasa Inggris untuk menerapkan Teknik Tanya-Jawab karena teknik ini bermanfaat dalam meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam menulis teks recount. Lebih lanjut kepada peneliti yang akan datang khususnya bagi mereka yang memiliki permasalahan yang sama dan tertarik untuk menerapkan Teknik Tanya-Jawab dalam penelitian mereka disarankan agar mereka menerapkan Teknik Tanya-Jawab pada bidang keterampilan yang sama yang difokuskan untuk peningkatan kreatifitas dan keinginan-tahu siswa dalam menulis (menulis kreatif) atau pada pembelajaran bidang keterampilan bahasa lainnya seperti menyimak dan berbicara (dengan menyuruh siswa untuk menyimak sebuah monolog lisan misalnya dan kemudian menyuruh mereka menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan tentang monolog tersebut secara lisan).
