Oka M.A. Key Words the Gricean Cooperative Principle flouting hedging figures of speech conversations The Secret Agent. The Cooperative Principle (CP) was proposed by a philosopher H.P. Grice. The principle states that a speaker should be cooperative by making the conversational contribution as required in the talk exchange. Grice proposed four conversational maxims which speakers should abide (1) Maxim of Quantity that is to make the contribution as informative as required and not to make it more informative than is required (2) Maxim of Quality that is not to say what the speaker believes to be false and not to say things that the speaker lacks evidence (3) Maxim of Relation which tells speakers to be relevant and (4) Maxim of Manner which tells speakers to be perspicuous (a) avoid obscurity (b) avoid ambiguity (c) be brief and (d) be orderly. In real world speakers do not always abide the four maxims mentioned above. In other words they often flout and/or hedge the maxims. Flouting the maxims means that speakers violate the conversational maxims while hedging the maxims means that the speakers do not want to be committed on the substance of the utterance. Flouting is often done through figurative language. This research tries to describe how the characters in The Secret Agent flout and/or hedge the conversational maxims. It is elaborated into (1) the description of kinds of conversational maxims flouted and/or hedged in the conversations (2) explanation of the distribution of the flouting and hedging (3) the description of the speakers reasons for using the flouting and hedging and (4) the description of the grammatical patterns of the flouting and hedging. The description of kinds of conversational maxims flouted and/or hedged in the conversations and the explanation of the distribution of the flouting and hedging are based on Grice s conversational maxims the description of the speakers reasons for using flouting and hedging is based on the Cooperative Principle (CP) proposed by Grice and the Politeness Principles (PP) by Leech while the description of the grammatical patterns of the flouting and hedging is based on the parts of the sentence which flout/hedge the maxims. In order to answer the research problems a qualitative research was done. The data were collected from the characters conversations containing six figures of speech mentioned in Grundy (2000) irony metaphor overstatement rhetorical question tautology and understatement. The results show that there are five kinds of figurative language used in the conversations in the novel and the most frequently used figure of speech is metaphor (83.72%) then followed by overstatement (4.65%) rhetorical question (4.65%) tautology (4.65%) and the least is irony (2.33%). It is also found that there are three kinds of conversational maxims flouted in the conversations and maxim of Manner is the most frequently flouted in the conversations (50.73%) the second is maxim of Quality (42.03) and the last is maxim of Quantity (7.24%). While in term of grammatical patterns most of the flouting and all of the hedging are done through the whole sentence. Based on the research findings it is suggested that the novel can be used as material for teaching literature and cross-cultural understanding (CCU) as it presents the use of figures of speech to convey messages and thoughts for example My heart went down into my boots (p.29) and I suppose the cup of horrors was full enough for such as me (p.298). Prinsip Kerja Sama (PK) diperkenalkan oleh seorang filsuf H.P. Grice. Prinsip itu menyatakan bahwa seorang penutur harus bekerja sama dengan memberikan kontribusi yang diperlukan dalam tuturan itu. Grice mengemukakan empat macam maksim tuturan (1) Maksim Kuantitas yaitu memberikan kontribusi yang cukup informatif sesuai yang diperlukan dan tidak lebih informatif dari yang diperlukan (2) Maksim Kualitas yaitu dengan tidak mengatakan suatu yang diyakini itu tidak benar atau suatu yang bukti kebenarannya kurang meyakinkan (3) Maksim Hubungan yang mengatakan bahwa penutur harus memberikan informasi yang relevan dan (4) Maksim Cara yang mengatakan bahwa penutur harus memberikan informasi yang mudah dimengerti (a) menghindari pernyataan-pernyataan yang samar (b) menghindari ketaksaan (c) usahakan membuat pernyataan yang ringkas dan (d) usahakan berbicara dengan teratur. Dalam kenyataan hidup sehari-hari penutur sering tidak mematuhi maksim-maksim tersebut. Dengan kata lain mereka sering melanggar dan atau mengungkung/membatasi maksim-maksim tersebut. Melanggar (flouting) maksim berarti penutur tidak mematuhi maksim-maksim dalam Prinsip Kerja Sama sedangkan mengungkung/membatasi (hedging) berarti penutur tidak ingin terlibat sepenuhnya dalam isi pokok tuturan. Pelanggaran terhadap Prinsip Kerja Sama sering dilakukan penutur dengan menggunakan majas. Penelitian ini mencoba mendeskripsikan bagaimana para pelaku dalam novel The Secret Agent melanggar dan/atau membatasi maksim-maksim tuturan. Hal ini dijabarkan dalam (1) deskripsi tentang jenis maksim tuturan yang dilanggar/dibatasi dalam tuturan (2) penjelasan tentang distribusi dari pelanggaran (flouting) dan pembatasan (hedging) (3) deskripsi dari kemungkinan alasan-alasan para penutur untuk melanggar dan/atau membatasi maksim-maksim tuturan dan (4) deskripsi tentang pola tatabahasa dari pelanggaran (flouting) dan pembatasan (hedging) tersebut. Deskripsi tentang jenis-jenis maksim tuturan yang dilanggar/dibatasi dalam tuturan-tuturan dan penjelasan tentang distribusi dari pelanggaran (flouting) dan pembatasan (hedging) didasarkan pada teori Grice tentang maksim-maksim dalam Prinsip Kerja Sama deskripsi tentang alasan-alasan penutur untuk melanggar/membatasi maksim-maksim tersebut ditulis berdasarkan teori Grice tentang Prinsip Kerja Sama (PK) dan teori yang dikemukakan Leech tentang Prinsip Sopan Santun (PS) sementara diskripsi tentang pola tatbahasa dalam pelanggaran/pembatasan (flouting/hedging) didasarkan pada bagian kalimat yang mengandung pelanggaran/pembatasan. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian dilakukan riset kualitatif. Data diambil dari tuturan-tuturan para pelaku dalam novel tersebut yang berisi 6 jenis majas yang disebutkan dalam Grundy (2000) ironi metafor hiperbola pertanyaan retorik (rhetorical question) tautologi dan understatement (pernyataan yang dibuat kurang dari yang sebenarnya). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada lima jenis majas yang digunakan dalam tuturan dan majas yang paling banyak digunakan oleh para penutur adalah metaphor (83 72%) disusul dengan overstatement (4 65%) pertanyaan retorik (4 65%) tautologi (4 65%) dan yang paling sedikit adalah ironi (2 33%). Juga ditemukan ada tiga macam maksim tuturan yang dilanggar/dibatasi dan maksim Cara adalah maksim yang paling banyak dilanggar/dibatasi oleh para penutur (50 73%) yang kedua adalah maksim Kualitas (42 03%) dan yang terakhir adalah maksim Kuantitas (7 24%). Sedangkan pola tatabahasa yang digunakan dalam pelanggaran (flouting) dan pembatasan (hedging) pola kalimat lengkap. Berdasarkan pada hasil penelitian novel ini dianjurkan untuk digunakan sebagai bahan ajar literature dan cross-cultural understanding (CCU pengertian tentang kultur negara/bangsa lain) karena novel ini menyajikan penggunaan majas-majas untuk menyampaikan pesan atau pikiran misalnya My heart went down into my boots (Jantungku turun ke sepatuku) (hal.29) dan I suppose the cup of horrors was full enough for such as me (Aku kira piala yang berisi hal-hal yang mengerikan ini terlalu penuh untuk orang sepertiku) (hal.298). Ungkapan-ungkapan semacam itu akan memperkaya pengetahuan dan pengertian para mahasiswa tentang kultur bangsa Inggris.
