Abstract

Based on the preliminary study conducted at the English Study Program the second semester students who join Reading II class still have problems in comprehending reading text. Their ability in comprehending reading texts was still insufficient. The insufficient ability of the students might be caused by several factors. First the students reading skills in finding information from the text were still insufficient. Second they still had limited vocabulary. Third their motivation in learning English especially in reading a text was also still low. Many of them were passive during the teaching and learning process. This study is designed to improve the students reading comprehension by using summarizing technique. It aims at finding out how the summarizing technique can be used to improve the reading comprehension of the students of the English Study Program of State Polytechnics of Jember. The study employed a classroom action research design in which the researcher and the research collaborator worked together in designing the lesson plan implementing the action analyzing the data and doing reflections. The subjects of this research were 31 second-semester students of English Study Program of State Polytechnics of Jember of the 2007/2008 academic year. This study was conducted in two cycles following the procedure of action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. Each cycle of the study comprises 3 meetings. The data of this study was obtained through (1) observation checklists (2) field notes (3) rubric for assessing the students summary (4) the students questionnaire and (5) the reading comprehension test. They were taken during the implementation of the action. The findings showed that the best procedures of implementing the summarizing technique in the teaching-learning of reading comprehension of the study were (1) stimulating the students prior knowledge (2) giving some leading questions related to the picture (3) having brainstorming (4) writing the students ideas on the white board (5) making a conclusion about the topic being discussed (6) reading the text once or twice either aloud or silently (7) identifying the general topic of the text (8) identifying the pattern of the text development (9) discussing the difficult words and find synonym for them (10) identifying the main idea of each paragraph (11) identifying supporting details of each paragraph (12) classifying the details of each paragraph into important and not important details (13) drawing the outline of the text based on the main idea and the important details (14) making a summary from the text being studied based on the outline already prepared (15) doing exercises related to the text (16) reviewing the text content and checks the students reading comprehension by asking questions to the students based on the text (16) giving some questions of the text related to their own knowledge and experiences and (17) making a conclusion about the content of the text. The study also shows that the implementation of summarizing technique in the teaching-learning of reading comprehension is able to improve the students reading comprehension. The students mean score increased from 54.26 in the preliminary study to 59.36 in Cycle 1 and 61.81 in Cycle 2. Based on the findings of the study some suggestions are made. It is suggested for the teachers to (1) make a well-prepared lesson plan which focuses on the selection of the instructional material and media as well as the time allocation (2) provide students with an opportunity to discuss texts and to further develop the skills that will help them better comprehend texts (3) provide a series of questions to the students to highlight the most important elements of a piece of text (4) give a model of how to make a summary correctly by demonstrating the steps with a model of passage (5) assign the students to make a summary individually (6) encourage the students to make a summary by using their own words (7) display the students best works as the benchmark on the class wall or in the school paper (8) make an evaluation on the process and on the result of teaching and learning and (9) design subjective formative tests to measure the students achievement. Finally it is recommended for the English teachers to apply this technique as one of the alternatives in the teaching of reading comprehension.
