Abstract

Based on the researcher s experience in teaching English and preliminary study conducted the ability of the second year students of MTsN Malang I in writing paragraph was still unsatisfactory. The students were not able to express their ideas in a good paragraph. They made many mistakes in their writing in terms of content organization language use and mechanics. To overcome this problem the researcher proposed one of the suitable strategies in the teaching English writing recount using picture series. The research aimed at improving the students ability in writing recount using picture series employing Collaborative Classroom Action Research. Both the researcher and his collaborator worked together in planning implementing observing the action and reflecting the data collected from the teaching and learning process and the students writing products. The subjects of this research were 29 students of grade 8 B of MTsN Malang I Jawa Timur Province 2008/2009 academic year. The research was conducted in three cycles each of which had one meeting. The findings proved that using picture series had improved students ability in writing recount. The steps were (1) the teacher gave the picture series to groups of four students (2) the teacher asked the students to find words or the names of objects of the picture series (3) the teacher taught the students about the simple past tense by asking them to make some sentences orally based on picture series (4) the teacher asked the students to find ideas of the picture series. Based on the above findings the suggestions are made (1) to develop the teacher s strategy in applying picture series it is suggested that teachers socialize the strategy in teachers meeting workshops trainings or to write articles about writing which uses picture series strategy in the students books or journals (2) it is recommended that the students use picture series as a learning strategy to practice their writing ability which can be done in their extracurricular activity (3) future researchers are suggested to conduct a similar study using picture series with different setting and subjects for the improvement of the teaching writing recount.
