M.A. Ph.D. Key terms Speed reading technique reading comprehension. As one of the language skills reading has a major and crucial role in facilitating students to learn a foreign language. Reading enables students to find out information from an array of texts ranging from textbooks newspapers magazines advertisements to brochures. Reading also enables students to know how English is actually used in printed and written forms. The fact shows that not every individual learns to read English texts well. As observed during the writer s many years of teaching at the MTs Negeri Cibinong Bogor he found out that the students reading skill was low. Their comprehension was not sufficient. They commonly read slowly and made frequent regressions on the text they read. These students were not adequately exposed to English passages unless the teachers provided the texts. It seemed that their motivation to read was low. The condition of the students might be caused by the fact that they always found difficulties in comprehending passages. The possible causes were that they had limited vocabulary mastery they had no special technique or strategy to read effectively. The objectives of the study are to find out how (1) Speed reading techniques can improve the students literal comprehension and how (2) Speed reading techniques can improve the students inferential comprehension. The study was a Classroom Action Research. The procedure of the research consisted of four major steps namely planning implementing observing and reflecting. This study consists of two cycles. Each of them consists of three meetings for the teaching and learning process and one meeting for post test. The subjects of the study are the third-year students of MTs Negeri Cibinong Bogor. The data concerning the students comprehension were collected using tests (pre-test and post test). The data that were taken from the tests were analyzed with SPSS 11.5 program. The analyzed data were then interpreted by considering the pre-determined criteria of achievement. The results of the research showed that speed-reading technique was effective in increasing the students reading speed and their reading comprehension achievements. This fact was clearly indicated by the increase of percentages of achievement through the cycles of action that is 43 % (Pre-test) 61 % (Cycle 1) and 72 % (Cycle 2). The scores had fulfilled the criteria of success in implementing speed-reading technique namely the improvement of students reading comprehension ability. The fact that the average students reading speed increased by implementing speed-reading technique. It means that the target of applying speed-reading technique to improve the students reading speed had been reached. Based on the research findings it was concluded that (1) the implementation of speed reading technique in teaching reading comprehension not only improved the students ability to read faster but also their comprehension (2) the implementation of speed reading technique in teaching reading comprehension could improve the students literal reading comprehension ability and (3) the implementation of speed reading technique in teaching reading comprehension could improve the students inferential reading comprehension ability. It is advisable for the English teacher especially in teaching reading to use speed-reading techniques since the techniques can increase the students reading comprehension ability. It is also suggested that the future researchers apply such technique more deliberately and more effectively.
