Abstract

The second year students of SMP Negeri 3 Nganjuk in 2007/2008 academic year did not show enough mastery of writing skill. This judgment was based on the results of the preliminary study which showed that their writing skill was low that is they could not write recount paragraphs correctly and properly. Their paragraphs were not complete with the details the ideas expressed were not clear and there were some errors in grammar vocabulary and mechanics. These problems surfaced due to some factors (1) the teaching of writing was almost neglected by the teachers (2) the teacher used to assign the students to write paragraphs without considering the process (3) the teacher s strategy in teaching English was not varied (4) the students did not have enough writing practice and (5) the students were not active during the writing activities because of low motivation in writing activity. The research was planned to improve the skill of writing recount texts of the second year students of SMP Negeri 3 Nganjuk through the implementation of Interactive Experiences. The research problem formulated was How can the skill of writing recount texts of the second year students of SMP Negeri 3 Nganjuk in 2007/2008 academic years be improved through the implementation of interactive experiences The implementation of interactive experiences involved four major stages of teaching and learning English i.e. building knowledge of text modeling of text joint construction of text and independent construction of text which was directed to group work and peer editing in writing process. These activities were expected to help students organize their ideas better in their paragraphs. The study was classroom action research referring to the model proposed by Kemmis and McTagard (in Depdikbud 1996 6) and Ur (1996). It was intended to give students the most appropriate strategy used to improve their writing skill. The researcher employed four steps in each learning cycle namely planning an action implementing the plan observing the action and reflecting on the results. To decide whether the implementation was successful or not the researcher mapped the results of data analysis onto the criteria of success that is the degree of students involvement during the lesson (including the motivation) the results of students writing drafts and the average score of the writing products. During the implementation of the action in Cycle I some students were still not accustomed to experiencing the writing process. Thus the Cycle II was carried out by modifying the pre-writing activity in the form of neighborhood walk activities and by giving students more opportunities to decide on the topic and on the members of group freely. From the study some conclusions can be drawn. The interactive experiences were effective to improve the students skill in writing recount texts. It was found that the degree of students involvement during the lesson achieved 81.8% which was above the criteria and high motivation (78.25%). Secondly 37 students (92.5%) scored 75 on the analytic scoring rubric. Third the average score achieved by the students on writing recount at the end of cycle II was 78.17 that is above the criteria. Based on the findings the English teachers of SMP Negeri 3 Nganjuk are suggested that they apply the procedures developed in this study in the teaching of writing recount text. The students are suggested that they apply the writing process though interactive experiences in writing. In addition it is suggested that in designing syllabus the teacher include the strategy of interactive experiences in the teaching and learning of writing.
