Abstract

The fact emerging from the teaching of the reading comprehension at Islamic University of Malang is the low ability of the students in comprehending the text. The result of reconnaissance shows several findings (1) the students have low motivation in reading texts (2) the students find difficulties in understanding texts (3) the teacher dominates the teaching and learning process and (4) the teacher never uses RT. To cope with the problems the researcher applies Reciprocal Teaching. With such learning method it is expected that the students reading comprehension can be improved. The objective of the present study is to investigate how the fourth-semester students reading comprehension can be improved by using Reciprocal Teaching. This study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) with a collaborative design. The procedure of the research consists of four major steps. They are planning implementation observation and reflection. The subjects of the study are the fourth-semester English students of Islamic University of Malang class C comprising of 24 students. This study is conducted in one cycle in which the cycle consists of three meetings for teaching and learning activities and one meeting for test. To collect data some instruments are used such as tests observation forms and field notes. The data taken from the pre-test the three quizzes and the posttest are analyzed and presented quantitatively. Meanwhile the data that are derived from observation forms and field notes are analyzed and presented qualitatively. The findings of the research show that there are some indispensable activities that should be followed to teach reading comprehension through Reciprocal Teaching. The first activity is assigning the students into heterogeneous groups based on their achievement levels. The second activity is designing the seating arrangement. The third activity is presenting the reading material that comprises three stages namely a) pre-reading activity focuses on activating the students prior knowledge b) whilst-reading activity focuses on implementing the Reciprocal Teaching c) post-reading activity focuses on rechecking the students understanding of the text. The last activity is administering the quiz. The students take the test individually without help from other students or from the teacher. The result of the research also shows that the use of appropriate model of Reciprocal Teaching can improve the students reading comprehension. The improvement is indicated by the increase of the students mean score throughout the cycle of action that is (55.83) in the pretest and (73.75) at the Posttest. Besides the students are more motivated and active to study using the method. They learn to work together and to help each other in a group with different abilities. Based on the findings of the research it is advisable for the teachers to study and apply Reciprocal Teaching in teaching reading comprehension to their students. Furthermore future researchers are suggested to use the first the second and the third semester students as the subjects. It is advisable to study the principles for successful group work and prepare a more deliberate planning before carrying out a similar research.
