Abstract

This research and development (R D) study involves the students of the seventh grade of MTs Negeri Mojokerto the English teachers of the school and three experts. It was the development of the EFL listening materials for the students of the seventh grade of MTs Negeri Mojokerto. The objective was to develop the EFL listening materials for the students of the seventh grade in the first and second semesters. The procedure of the study was conducting needs survey developing materials experts and teachers validation revising trying out the materials revising and getting the final product. The instruments in needs survey were questionnaires an interview guide and field notes. The data from the students were calculated in percentage and those from the teachers were described in qualitative way. The data from needs survey were used as the basis for the materials development. A validation form was used to collect the experts and teachers judgment on the materials. The experts validated them in terms of content language and style of delivery while the teachers evaluated them in terms of the suitability with the curriculum length and speed of delivery. The data from the experts and teachers were analyzed qualitatively. The try out was conducted by the English teacher to know the product s practicality effectiveness clarity of the recording attractiveness speed of delivery and level of difficulty of the materials. The subject was the students of the seventh grade. Ten students were selected from class 7 C as the sample by stratified random sampling. The class was chosen using simple random sampling by lottery. The data from the teacher and observation related to the practicality and effectiveness were presented quantitatively and descriptively. The data from the students related to clarity of the recording attractiveness speed of delivery and level of difficulty of the materials were analyzed quantitatively using percentage. The draft 1 was in the form of CD recorded materials a teacher s guide and a students worksheet containing 20 units for semester one and two. The topics are greetings introducing oneself and others announcement giving instruction and prohibition telling the time asking for and giving information talking about daily activities apologizing expressing politeness greeting cards congratulating personal letters asking for and offering help borrowing things asking for and giving opinion expressing likes and dislikes talking about a fact describing things describing someone and how to make and do something. The experts judgment showed that the content language and style of delivery were acceptable. However revision had to be done in terms of length of the dialogues and sentences cultural aspects situational background some grammatical errors and the arrangement of the map of the materials. The teachers judgment showed that the materials were appropriate with the curriculum. Besides speed of delivery and length were considered appropriate for the students. However the teachers said that it would be better if topics greeting cards and congratulating were combined as one topic and personal letters were deleted because it was not in the syllabus. Then the revision was done accordingly. The result of the first try out showed that only three units namely units 3 10 and 16 needed revising in terms of level of difficulty. The revision was done by simplifying the tasks on the students worksheet. Then the revised units were tried out. The result of the second try out showed that the revised three units were appropriate for the students. The final product is in the form of CD recorded materials a teacher s guide and a students worksheet. The CD contains the materials which have to be listened to by the students. The teacher s guide contains the direction of how to teach the materials the stages in teaching listening the tape scripts and the answers key. The students worksheet contains the tasks which have to be done by the students. The materials consisting of 10 units for semester one and 8 units for semester two were developed based on the School-Based English curriculum of MTs Negeri Mojokerto.
