Abstract

The study was aimed at developing a set of instructional materials for Reading Comprehension IV at the English Education Department of STKIP PGRI Pasuruan. It adopted the Lexical Approach in which lexical items and content of the study were used as the starting point of syllabus design. The observe-hypothesis-experiment paradigm in the Lexical Approach was employed resulting in the three stages of learning namely reading assignment focused practice and extensive reading. Expert verifications to verify the developed materials were conducted subsequent to the development. Revisions were made according to the comments and suggestions given by the experts. Further verification was conducted by trying out the materials to the intended students. The feedbacks from the student respondents were used to further revise the materials. The end product of the study was a set of teaching materials for Reading Comprehension IV consisting of ten units. Each unit consisted of three main parts the reading assignment focused practice and extensive reading. A sub list of general service list was given following the writing practice to show the students the lexical items to learn. In conclusion after the verifications and revisions the developed materials were appropriate as a source of learning materials for Reading Comprehension because of their experiential exploratory and elicitative nature. They provided exposure to the language in use provided chances for the learners to seek discoveries about language use and stimulated language use. A further study to measure the effectiveness of the developed materials is needed to be conducted. Research on applying the Lexical Approach on other areas of teaching is still versatile.
