Abstract

The social portrait about women related to social and behavior values is seen in two of Henry James works entitled Daisy Miller and The Portrait of A Lady. The two women characters in the novels are described as those failing in making their dreams come true due to their limited knowledge and experience of life to interact with European society. They fail in obtaining their pursuit due to their ignorance of cultural demand pertaining in the society surrounding them about how women are supposed to behave in the society. With reference to the abovementioned illustration this research is carried out to figure out the description of women image in the two novels. This research is to describe the social life and norm pertaining in the society described in the novels behavioral pattern shown by the two women characters and the conflict experienced by the two women characters in the novels. The research is a descriptive one with the use of three approaches psychological sociological and feminism approaches. The data in textual information in forms of words phrases clauses and sentences as well as paragraph taken from the novels. The data are then analyzed through the following steps data collection data selection and classification data analysis data interpretation and data conclusion. From the research it can be figured out that both the American and European values influence the two women characters. The clash of values can be significantly seen when they are in Europe. This is due to the fact that European society cannot accept the value they bring from their country. Daisy and Isabel are both plain women who do not realize that their dreams to live independently in a modern life can bring them disaster. They try to actualize themselves trough real actions in pursuing their dreams but are not capable in adjusting life with their new surroundings and hence fail in handling the problems they are to face. They become the victims of their own dreams. Prosperous life do not make the two main female characters success in adapting the applied social code and behavior. They have to face many problems because of their individual beliefs that are irrelevant with the European social norms. They fail to adjust the social values pertaining in their surrounding that lead them confronted by the European community. Unfortunately they are immature and inexperienced young women. Therefore they cannot minimize or solve the problems in their interactions that make them to experience internal and external conflicts. It is worthy studying both novels since they give contributions for teachers students and other future researchers. James novels are can be used to teach cross culture understanding because they facilitate teachers to introduce students .about the importance of understanding culture in the social context. Daisy Miller and The Portrait of A Lady are good sources for teachers to develop students knowledge about literary appreciation. The novels show image of women are influenced by the applied social convention. Women are expected to obey it otherwise they should take a risk that endangers their existence. In addition James works are unique that other future researchers can conduct the following research (1) comparing James works with other American writers who write about women of the day (2) focusing on James style so that they will have an in depth knowledge of his maturity in writing.
