Abstract

The study titled The Cooperative and Politeness Principle in Radio Broadcasting Conversations is meant to investigate two research problems (1) the extent of the use of CP (Cooperative Principles) and PP (Politeness Principles) in the MAS FM radio broadcasting conversations and (2) the speakers purposes in terms of illocutionary acts (IA). The CP has four maxims Quantity Quality Relation and Manner. The PP has six maxims Tact Generosity Approbation Agreement Modesty and Sympathy Maxim. On the other hand the speakers pur-poses in terms of IA have four functions Competitive Convivial Collaborative and Conflictive. The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative. It aims at describing what exists in the nature of conversation via the telephone among the participants in the Radio MAS FM. The research subjects are the participants including the presenters the invited guests and the audiences in joining the pro-gram. The data in this research are utterances produced by the participants in carrying out their conversations to discuss certain topics forwarded. The main instrument of this research is the researcher herself supported by the equipments some cassettes a tape recorder and a radio. The researcher con-ducts two main steps (1) data collection and (2) data analysis. Firstly in the data collection the researcher applies several steps (1) recording the conversation conducted in the Radio MAS FM and (2) transcribing the utterances produced by all participants. Secondly in data analysis the researcher applies six steps (1) transcribing the data (2) reducing the data (3) coding the data (4) classifying the data refer-ring to the research problems (5) displaying the data and (6) drawing conclusion. In answering the first research problem the extent of the use of the CP and PP in MAS FM radio broadcasting conversations - the results of the data ana-lysis show that generally the ten maxims of the CP and PP are applied by the par-ticipants. Their uses vary from the most to the least frequently used. The most frequently used maxims are Quantity Relation Manner Quality and Sympathy. On the other hand the least frequently used maxims are Tact Generosity Modes-ty Approbation and Agreement. Besides it shows that there are many over-lapping and violating of the maxims. The most frequently violated maxim is the Relation. In answering the second research problem the speakers purposes in terms of the IA- Competitive Convivial Collaborative and Conflictive Functions - the result shows that the Conflictive Function is the only one which is not used at all by the participants. Based on the result as well as the implication the research recommenda-tions are worth considering to the English teachers/ lecturers the English Depart-ment students and the radio broadcasting conversation participants. The lecturers of Pragmatics in English Department at a university can use of the results of the study to develop the teaching of CP and PP and Speech Acts especially the Illocutionary Acts (IA). In view of the speaking class the English Department students should be given many exercises to apply the CP and PP in conveying their ideas as a spoken form. Therefore they should have more exer-cises about how they communicate their ideas properly based on various aspects such as setting participants ends acts key instruments norms and genres concerning the CP and PP. It is suggested to conduct several researches for the future researchers in-cluding English Department students in carrying out their researches or theses related to the Pragmatics especially the application of CP and PP. First they need to conduct the research on the other practical language use such as student-tea-cher interaction in classroom activity master of ceremony speakers etc. Second they could also do the replication of the research based on the differences of the problems context subject varieties and research location. Participants of the conversations via telephone in a radio broadcast on air especially in Radio Mas FM should pay attention to the CP and PP as well as the IA. In terms of applying the CP and PP the participants should consider the topic forwarded than unrelated and unnecessary comments. Besides they had better avoid to make many mocking jokes because it may cause conflict among them. When some of them are offended the conversation would go in stuffiness and threatens to come to an end. The audiences had better consider the available time on the program. In other words they should give the chance to the other audiences who want to join the program too.
