Abstract

The present study aims at describing the implementation of the teaching of Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang especially on 4 aspects (1) the implementation of the curriculum of Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang (2) the materials of teaching of Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang (3) the method of teaching of Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang and (4) the assessment used in the teaching of Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang. The methodology employed in this study is descriptive-participant observation studies-types of qualitative research. The data are in the form of words and are collected from the subjects experiences and perspectives. Besides the researcher also collects the large volume of descriptive data generated from observations fieldnotes interviews and the collection of documents. The instrument used is human-as-instrument and the researcher herself as the key instrument who is helped with other instruments namely observation fieldnotes interview and documentation. The trustworthiness of the data the researcher use strategies that are proposed by Ary (2004 435) namely (1) multiple methods of data collection (2) building an audit trail (3) working with a team and (4) member check. The results of the study show that firstly the implementation of the curriculum of Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang was observed through the suitability of the catalog and the Course Outline. It shows that the aims in the catalog was well-developed in the Course Outline despite its little slip on the use of the vague/unexplainable words some missing expressions and the use of some unspecified terms. The activities are well-thought that they plan the students to have such well-guided activities that the students can do in a graded difficulty from inside then outside the classroom. The evaluation takes the students active participation in the classroom the students attendance the assignments quizzes midterm test and final test. The source books used in the course are mostly old books which are trusted to give the relevant source in terms of its challenge besides the appropriateness of the materials in terms of topics contents and the scope of the materials so that they still can be maintained. Secondly the materials of teaching Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang was observed through five aspects. The form of the materials is printed one. The role of the materials which is important as a resource book or reference of language presentation language activities source of stimulation a syllabus and a support for less experienced teacher who has not got confidence. The kinds of the materials mostly take the simplified one. The scope of the course covers the types of the texts the language exercises and some reading skills. The sequence or the organization of the course presents the materials from simple to complex. It also considers the needs of the students prerequisite learning part to whole and whole to part sequence and spiral sequencing. The course structure considers the syllabus framework and the instructional block the textbook uses. Thirdly the method of teaching of Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang was studied from the kinds of techniques of teaching used by the lecturer. It shows that the techniques used are mostly questioning strategies and many other techniques which are used actively including code-switching which is still employed. The most important thing is the lecturer can form the students habit of reading which they can develop themselves and have a possible long-live reading in their future. Fourthly the assessment of the teaching of Reading Comprehension I in the English Department of State University of Malang was done in four different ways and kinds of assessments. There are five ways of measuring the students performance in Reading Comprehension I class and all of the students works both inside or outside the classroom are rewarded and considered to determine the students score. The kinds of test are C-tests multiple choice tests subjective tests requiring brief and short answers and subjective test requiring the students to make questions from the answer provided. Based on the findings the following suggestions can be offered. (1) Use operational words to replace the vague verb master/develop (2) Clarify the behavioral performance of achieving the 5000 word level (3) Posit the literal and inferential meaning in the catalog in the course outline clearly (4) Specify the text structures that the students are expected to handle (5) Identify the reading skills that the students are expected to grasp clearly. For the materials it is necessary to clearly place critical comprehension literal and inferential comprehension. For the techniques many kinds of techniques are offered in the teaching of reading to avoid boredom. The way and kinds of evaluation employed to measure the students achievement needs to mention the reason of deciding the percentage of the evaluation of the students performance in Reading Comprehension I. Besides the test booklet is needed to be renewed every year for authenticity and development of knowledge of reading.
