Abstract

The study was conducted in order to investigate the learning and teaching of English for children program at Oxford Course Indonesia (OCI) Madiun. It was aimed to answer four questions (1) What do the teachers think about the teaching of English for children at Oxford Course Indonesia (OCI) Madiun (2) What are the strategies used by the teachers in teaching English for children and (3) What are the students wants and opinions in learning English for children In order to answer those research problems a descriptive qualitative classroom research was conducted in the children English classes of OCI Madiun. The main instrument of the study was the researcher herself. In completing the data the researcher used a cassette recorder observation checklists interview guides and field notes. The data of the study were the description of anything that occurred in the classroom. It comprised all the teachers did in their classroom the interaction between teacher and the students and the students responses during the learning and teaching process. Those data were collected through observation. In analysing the data a procedure suggested by Miles and Huberman (1984) called Interactive Model was applied in the study. Confirming the data analysis the study used triangulations of the sources (e.g. the teacher and the students) the data (e.g. the description of anything that occurred in the classroom) the theory (e.g. relevant theories on learning and teaching process) and the methodology (e.g. observation interview field notes and recording). The findings showed that generally the learning and teaching process of English for children at OCI Madiun ran smoothly. It meant that the teacher and students were cooperative to create a nice learning and teaching process. In common the teachers supported the teaching of English for children. That is why they were willing to work with the children even though they realized that sometimes it was too hard to be involved with them. During the teaching of English for children the teachers applied the same teaching activities namely pre-activities whilst-activities and post-activities. In working with the children the teacher always tried to be creative by giving and applying various teaching materials media (e.g. real objects pictures flash cards and tape recorder) and techniques (e.g. translation imperative drills playing games singing songs and telling or reading stories). The teachers met some problems in doing their jobs for instances two of five teachers being interviewed stated that the syllabus that was available at OCI Madiun was not quite appropriate for the teaching of English for children recently. Other problems also happened on the materials and media available at the course. Covering those problems the teachers selected some parts of the syllabus which were applicable and tried to formulate their own lesson plans besides they found the appropriate supplementary books and media. The students in general stated that they liked English very much. Their happiness and willingness to be able to speak English fluently made them enjoy in joining the program. The students were encouraged to study English as long as they were fun and comfortable at the class. The students said that the material of the program was not difficult. They also argued that they liked to enjoy the when the teachers used real objects and pictures. In doing the assignments the students seemed to do it happily especially when the teachers discussed the assignments soon after they finished the tasks. On the basis of the above findings some suggestions were proposed. First in accordance the issue about the instructional materials used the teachers should keep using various sources of instructional materials. The teachers could use media proportionally meaning that they should not use one kind of medium frequently and neglect the other media. It was suggested that the teachers used other instructional media that were available in the course such as television overhead projectors and Video Compact Disk (VCD) players. Secondly it was important for the teachers to give the students more chances to use the language especially in the classroom under the teacher s supervision. The teachers should be able to activate the students to speak up and practice the language. In order to give the students more English exposures the teachers were suggested to speak English as frequently as possible in presenting the lesson and always to communicate in English with other English teachers at school. Besides the teachers should be aware of the students difficulties so that they were ready to help the students to solve their learning problems.
