Abstract

The objective of this research is directed to increase the speaking ability of the eleventh year students of SMA N 1 Tumpang Kab. Malang by applying the role-play strategy. The result of the preliminary study reveals that the causes of the students inability to speak English are (1) the limited chance for the students to speak in the classroom (2) the limited vocabulary the students have (3) the psychological burden of the students such as feeling afraid of being punished being laughed at or being identified as stupid students (4) the lack of group activities the students have in the class and (5) the lack of the students motivation to confirm the vocabulary in the dictionary. Supported by some theories experiences and previous studies in speaking skill the researcher decides to use the role-play strategy to solve the students problem on speaking. For this purpose the researcher then formulates the research problem as how can the students speaking ability be increased through role-play strategyudy employs collaborative classroom action research design in which the researcher and the collaborator teacher work together in designing the lesson plan implementing the action and making reflection. The subjects of this research are all the students of eleventh year students Language Program of SMA Negeri1 Tumpang Malang of 2006 2007 academic year. This study is conducted in two cycles following the procedures of action research i.e. planning implementing observing and reflecting. To collect the data the researcher uses some instruments namely observation sheets field notes interview guidelines and questionnaires. The obtained data are presented and analyzed in two ways qualitative and quantitative data procedures. To see the students activity during the process of learning in the classroom the researcher analyzes and presents the data qualitatively. Meanwhile quantitative data procedure is used to analyze and present the students improvements on the speaking skill. The findings of the research show that role-play strategy is effective to be used in increasing the students speaking ability. Starting from 8 students (26%) who are active and able to speak English in the preliminary study the number increases to 24 students (80%) after implementation of the role-play strategy. It is signaled by the match of all the indicators achieved at the end of the study and its criteria of success that is the students are actively involved during teaching and learning process able to express their ideas opinions and feeling well when they perform their performance without worrying of making mistakes not being shy and inferior anymore and can use their language function correctly besides able to work in groups or in teams cooperatively.
