ABSTRACT Bueraheng Robeeyah. 2017. The Error of Word Formation in Using Affixes on Essays done by Thai Student s at IAIN Tulungagung. Keywords the word formation error affixes. In the process of formal education in many universities college students are required to speak in Bahasa Indonesia whether they want to speak or not. College students should be able to use Bahasa Indonesia correctly in spoken and written form. Using Bahasa Indonesia correctly is not easy to foreign students. Usually they found difficulty in comprehending the speaking listening reading and writing even the grammar in Bahasa Indonesia. One of the errors made by Thai students is the use of grammar in Bahasa Indonesia. Usually grammatical error can be found easily in writing form especially in using affixes. All types of error or miss-grammar called error. It can be happened because college students have to be able to structure based on the structure in Bahasa Indonesia. This study is aimed to describe the language error in adding affix missing affix and misunderstanding of using affix in Thai students at IAIN Tulungagung. This study is text analysis using qualitative approach. The data collection of this study is the miss-word formation related to the missing affix adding affix and misunderstanding of using affix. The source of data is based on the Thai students essay who study at IAIN Tulungagung. The researcher prepares different theme given by the researcher on the worksheets as the instrument of the study. They have to make an essay based on the theme given. The procedure of data analysis has some steps (1) identifying the certain error (2) analyzing the data inductively by describing the cause and (3) interpreting the result of data analysis and discussion. The result of the study shows that Thai students did some miss-word formation errors. The errors made by them are adding affix missing affix and misunderstanding of using affix. First missing affix includes (1) deleting prefix (meN- ber- and ter) (2) deleting suffix an and (3) deleting convex (me-i me-kan ber-an per-an and ke-an). Second adding affix as (1) adding prefix only happen on additional ber- and (2) adding suffix i -an and kan. The last the miss-word formation is misunderstanding of the use affix as (1) misunderstanding the use of prefix (ber- meN- per- and ter-) a word of use ber- ambiguous with the word (me- ber-an me-kan me-i and per-) a word of use meN- ambiguous with the word ber- and di- a word of use per- ambiguous with the word ber- a word of use ter- ambiguous when use with affix an di and me-kan (2) misunderstanding the use of suffix (-an and -kan) a word of use an ambiguous with ber- meN- and kan ambiguous with me-kan and ber- and (3) misunderstanding the use of convex (me-kan ber-an per-an pe-an memper-an and memper-kan). a word of use me-kan ambiguous with (meN- me-i) a word of use ber-an ambiguous with (per-an be-an and me-kan) a word of use per-an ambiguous with (ber- pe-an memper-i memper-kan) a word of use pe-an ambiguous with (me-kan per-an meN-) and a word of use memper-an ambiguous with memper- and the last memper-kan ambiguous with (memper-i and me-kan). Based on the result of this study it has suggestions that can be used for the teacher and the students of BIPA. There are many students who speak Bahasa Indonesia informally in formal occasion. Therefore the teacher should plan to create an additional class to teach Thailand students Bahasa Indonesia formal pattern in speaking and writing. It is expected that the students will capable to practice the formal language in a good way. In addition the teacher of BIPA can provide the drill especially the terms of affixes related to prefixes (meN- ber- per- ter-) suffixes (-an -kan -i) dan convex (me-i me-kan ber-an per-an pe-an and memper-kan). Especially learning Bahasa Indonesia which related to the students need from Thailand should have an improvement to minimize the students error. Furthermore the suggestions are not only for Thailand students who live in Indonesia but also for those who are in Thailand. Both of them are expected to learn Bahasa Indonesia formally in order to avoid the same mistakes made by them.
