ABSTRACT Wahyuni Sri. 2009. Theory of Successes-Failings on Accompanying Street Children. Thesis. Out of School Department Postgraduate Program the State University of Malang. Advisor (I) Dr. Sanapiah Faisal (II) Dr. M. Djauzi Moedzakir M. A. Key words Success-failing accompanying street children. The effort of protecting street children has a purpose to warrant the fulfillment of children s right to live grow develop and participate optimally in accordance with human dignity and to receive protection from vandalism and discrimination so as to develop qualified morale and prosper children (verse 3 UURI no. 23/2002). Accompanying street children at drop in centre is one way in protecting those kids. This effort is important regarding to the increasing amount of street children. However there are always hindrances that prevent the implementation which lead to ineffectiveness as proven in the research of Dana Mandiri Trust that the accompanying implementation in East Java is strictly following the standards of Social Service and paying less attention to strengths and weaknesses aspects of the children which make ineffective implementation. One example of ineffectiveness is the fact that many children get back to their street life after having had an accompanying program despite the implementation and great financial cost. However there were street children who succes left their street life. Why are there success street children and fail street children while they have similar background and join in similar accompanying model What theory can be constructed from the data to explain the succes-failing accompanying These are the focuses of the research. The research aims at formulating a theory based on the data that will explain successes and failings in accompanying street children. The approach used was qualitative approach by using grounded theory research strategy. The research took place at Insan Mandiri Aisyiyah drop in centre (Rsg IMAs) Regency of Malang that was located at Perum Tunjungtirto Tunjungtirto Village Subdistrict of Singosari. Participants that were invited as research sources were 13 people 10 of which were still undergoing street-living and 3 of which succes left their street life those 13 children were prot g s of Rsg IMAs for 2006-2008. The age of the participants ranged from 15 to 21 years old. The data was collected through in depth interview participative observation and documentary study. The collected data was then analyzed by Constant Comparative Analysis method that used the combination of Glaser and Creswell models which had 4 stages as follows (1) developing categories based on information or field data record (2) combining the categories with the sub-categories (3) connecting each category to another so that theoretical framework would be visible and (4) writing theory or building a story which would connect those categories. The research found a success-failing theory in accompanying street children which pointed out that the success of the accompanying was greatly influenced by the children s mindset. The accompanying program would be succesful if it could drive the children s mindset from negative side to the positive one i.e it could replace the perspective of being unable to do something meaningless no worth life goal and free of responsibility with the perspective of being able to do something meaningful worth life goal and responsible. That theory construction was concluded in one concept that explained the success-failing phenomenon in assisting the kids named as the mindset revolution . This concept explained that accompanying street children would be fruitful if it can touch and eventually change the children s mindset otherwise it would fail it the accompanying focused solely in the kids hard skills. The validity was tested by using credibility test transferability test dependability test and confirmability test formulated by Lincoln and Guba. A credibility test was held through extended observation accuration improvement triangulation peer discussion negative case analysis and member check techniques. Transferability test was held by exposing the details of research setting while dependability and confirmability tests were held by showing the result of the whole research process. This research may become a reference for Nonformal and Informal Education researches especially the ones concerning on practicing and development programs. The developed theory may also be useful as a consideration for practitioners of street children practicing and development programs in constructing a more effective and creative accompanying model based on a distinct theory in order to avoid malpractice in taking care of street children . This theory is also applicable as the basis in developing accompanying programs towards society groups similar to street children. One question that needs follow-up research is what sort of practicing on accompanying model is appropriate to lead street children s mindset.
