The aim of this research is to study a phenomenon in the world of continuing education as a part of non-formal education. It is true that many researches have been done in the field of continuing education primarily on adult education but none of them have specifically focused on adult continuing education for professionals. Thus the phenomenon in question is the involvement of professionals in a continuing education program in general and in a continuing education program as held by the Continuing Education Centre of Petra Christian University in particular. The main focus of this study is on the motivation of professionals behind such an involvement. To arrive at detailed answers this focus is further geared into four specific questions (1) what is the profile of CE Centre Petra CU (2) how is the management of CE Centre Petra CU (3) what are the characteristics of the professionals participating in CE Centre Petra CU and (4) what are their reasons for learning at such a program. In line with these the objectives of this study are to describe the profile of CE Centre Petra CU the management policies of CE Centre Petra CU the profile of the participating professionals and the components of the involvement of professionals in a continuing education program To reach the objectives the study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using a case study design. As such the study has refered to Bogdan and Biklen s qualitative research theory and methods in education (1998) Data collection techniques include observations in-depth interviews and a review of documents. The subjects of the study are the professionals participating in CE Centre Petra CU and the key informant is the program coordinator . Subjects are selected using a snowball sampling technique. Supporting data are provided by the institution s alumni and the CE Centre Petra CU participants relatives. Data analysis is done based on Miles and Huberman s interactive method (1992). The findings show that (1) CE Centre Petra CU is a site extending and providing opportunities to professionals to improve their skills and abilities in their line of work 2) CE Centre Petra CU management is professionally organized and is supported by human resources recruited from within Petra CU this professionalism is primarily apparent from the dedication and cooperation the leaders instructors and related personnel show in maintaining the good image of the university and from the rigid discipline they exercise in performing their commitments 3) the participating professionals are working adults possessing particular skills mostly practitioners in the field of industry business and the like with a learning interest in job-related skills 4) the participants main motivation in entering the continuing education program is an urgent need to improve job-related skills as well as a profound attraction to the CE Centre and its professionally well-managed programs. Based on the findings the study suggests that universities provide continuing education programs for professionals develop a life-long learning culture among them and become an educational location center for an adult s self-development as an answer to the society s need for obtaining continuing professional knowledge.
