Abstract
Introduction: The development of information and communication technology has changed the future of libraries significantly , many have focused on the transition from traditional to digital libraries. Although digital libraries offer convenience, speed, and wider access to collections of library materials, cultural and historical characteristics are sometimes overlooked. T o maintain cultural and historical values, it is necessary to implement methods that enable digital libraries that display these aspects. This paper focuses on the historical trajectories of two universities, which might leave traces in the form of documents, archives, and artifacts that record the journey from their inception to the present. Method: Our research makes use of qualitative methods. The data include document reviews, photographs, and researchers' observations. The data were collected from the libraries of two universities in two countries, the Universiti T eknologi Malaysia (UTM) Library in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, and Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) Library in Malang, Indonesia. Results: UTM Library has created a space to maintain and exhibit the collection, namely the UTM Gallerium. UTM artifact collections originating from the fields of technology , science, engineering, and arts and culture are maintained and displayed both physically and virtually . Located in the Sultanah Zanariah Library Building, this gallery was opened in 2017. The UTM Gallerium is divided into several small galleries such as the University Heritage Gallery, Microfilm Gallery, Information T echnology Gallery, and Audio Gallery. Meanwhile, the artifacts on display are equipment and written documents used by the University from the 1970s to 1990s. The Library of UM also has the same goal, which is to display a collection of archives and other objects that show the journey of the UM campus since its establishment in 1954 under the heading "Special Collections", even though it is still in its early stages. Discussion: The UTM library is the primary reference for UM in creating the special collection. In this paper, we review strategies that UTM has applied in establishing and managing the Gallerium, as well as formulating the strategy to develop the Special Collection at UM. Conclusions: We highlight a number of positive lessons that can be drawn from the establishment of the UTM Gallerium, which the UM Library can take advantage of when developing a special collection in the library that displays cultural and historical characteristics.
