Abstract

This study discusses the creation of persuasion in a movie trailer and how it may indicate indexicality about a sense of belonging to different sociolinguistic contexts. The selected trailer is Yowis Ben (Javanese for ‘yes, let it be’), a movie released in 2018 that centers its storyline on the making of a band and the drama among the band members. Unlike most Indonesian movies that use Indonesian, the country’s national language, the characters of Yowis Ben speak in a local language, Malangan Javanese. The findings show that the movie trailer’s narrative persuasion is constructed by the local language, supplemented by the trailer’s visual and sound elements. Furthermore, the use of a local language succeeds in making the movie characters’ local linguistic practice appealing to a national audience. The study also touches on indexicality, in this case, how the use of Malangan Javanese reflects the youth culture in a particular sociolinguistic setting in Malang, East Java, and Indonesia in general.
