Abstract

In this introduction, we present our approach to “global perspectives on youth language” and provide an orientation to the study of youth’s language practices worldwide, based on current debates and developments in the field. The introduction intends to embrace the diverse and divergent perspectives that are available in studies on youth language. It firstly addresses terminological issues around youth language, notably “youth” and “language”(which will enable readers to reflect on the terminological choices made by authors); secondly, it considers the affordances of a global or international perspective alongside the importance of the local in youth language research; and it then turns to emerging themes in youth language research, specifically, linguistic manipulation, identity and ideology. The final section of this introduction will present the chapters in this volume. The chapter seeks to identify core topics in scholarly work and pave the way to a more global approach toward youth linguistic practices. In the study of youth language practices, especially on a global scale, investigation from diverse angles and through manifold perspectives in terms of theory and methods remains imperative, as these practices are not homogenous.
