Abstract

The progress of the 21st century requires education to be able to prepare students who can think critically to face global challenges. The use of the right learning model is one of the important factors for the achievement of learning goals. Utilizing an effective and appropriate model can provide an improvement in students ability to think critically and creatively. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of the application of the contextual problem-based learning model in improving students critical-creative thinking skills. Quasi experiment with a quantitative approach is the method used in this study. The subject of the study namely students of SMP Negeri 04 Batu was divided into VIII-A as an experimental class and VIII-B as a control class. Data collection techniques through observation documentation and tests. Data collection was carried out by providing tests in the form of essays totaling 10 questions. Data analysis uses a t-test. The results of the significance value were 0.000 le 0.05 and the average score of the experimental class was higher than that of the control class. The results of the study prove that the contextual problem-based learning model is influential in improving students ability to think critically and creatively in social studies learning. Recommendations for teachers that applying the contextual problem-based learning model can be one of the solutions to develop students activeness in the learning process. For the next researcher it can develop a learning context with other local wisdom values in Indonesia more broadly so that learning can be more active and dynamic.
