Abstract

Motivation is one of the most important factors in the learning process. With motivation learning goals will be easier to achieve. When students are motivated to learn they will better understand the subject matter especially English. Student motivation is divided into two intrinsic and extrinsic. Previous research has proven that student motivation affects student learning in general. However research that discusses student motivation based on gender is still limited so this study was conducted to find out student motivation based on gender differences in English language learning. This research uses descriptive quantitative method with survey type namely cross-sectional survey. Data were collected from one of the high schools in Malang by using the population as the sample in the study namely all students from 9 classes with a total of 279 students. Data were collected using a student motivation questionnaire consisting of twenty questions through Google Forms. Furthermore the data was processed in the form of percentages and calculation of motivation levels to determine the percentage level of student motivation both intrinsic and extrinsic which was taken at the result of the percentage of ldquo agree rdquo . The findings show that the intrinsic motivation of males is still lower than the intrinsic motivation of females. This result shows that male students have less desire to learn from themselves than female students who have a higher desire to learn from themselves. Meanwhile the findings also shows that male extrinsic motivation is lower than female extrinsic motivation. This result shows that male students only have a low concern for external factors compared to female students who pay more attention to external factors related to their learning. So it can be concluded that overall both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of females showed higher results than intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of male students in learning English in the classroom. Thus the hope for future research is to find solutions to balance the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of male and female students.
