Abstract

This study aims to investigate students rsquo motivation in mastering English spelling specifically through the implementation of a learning media which is the Crossword Puzzle Game. This research was conducted by adopting a survey design combined with a quantitative research methodology. A questionnaire pertaining to Gardner s (1985) aspects of motivation which are (1) a goal (2) effortful behavior to reach the goal (3) a desire to attain the goal and (4) positive attitudes towards the goal was used to gather the data. The data for this research will be focused on students rsquo perceptions. To fulfill all the data needed for this study the researcher involved 50 students from the 7th grade of Junior High School of MTs Al Hayatul Islamiyah Malang. These students participated in the survey which aimed to explore their perception of the motivation they got to master spelling after implementing the Crossword Puzzle Game in the learning activity. The findings demonstrated that the students agreed that from the use of the Crossword Puzzle Game might influence students motivation and satisfy all of the aspects of motivation. It has also been proven that most students agreed that all motivation aspects have an impact on building their motivation to master English spelling.
