Emotional experiences and motivation play an essential part in language learning because they influence students self-control behavior in the learning process. This study intends to determine enjoyment and anxiety in students as well as the situations that underpin these two emotions in the Indonesian learning environment. A mixed methods design with a quantitative approach using scales and qualitative data using open-ended questions by 98 EFL first-year students was used to answer this research question 1) What is the level of the FLE of the English Foreign Language first-year students 2) What is the level of the FLCA of the English Foreign Language first-year students 3) What is the correlation between their speaking anxiety and language enjoyment 4) What situations of speaking do EFL students find the most enjoyable 5) What situations of speaking do EFL students find most anxiety This data was collected using an adopted survey covering 21 questions for Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE) 16 for Foreign Language Class Anxiety (FLCA) and 2 for situations that produced enjoyment and anxiety. The quantitative results from this study demonstrated that there was no correlation between enjoyment and anxiety and EFL students experienced more significant levels of FLE. Meanwhile qualitative data revealed that among internal and external variables situations for learning affected by external factors (peers) dominated students FLE levels. On the other hand FLCA is highly affected by internal variables (student rsquo s self-confidence). As a result the current study proposes that more research should be conducted on FLE and FLCA in various contexts.
