Abstract

This research investigates students rsquo perception toward the impact of English movies in their own learning activity to improve their listening skills. The research applied a survey design which consisted of fifty-three students who took basic listening class. The data collection was administered by using online questionnaire and interview. The finding shows that most of the students choose Sci-fi genre to watch and a short summary as their favorite strategy. In addition it shows that the students have positive attitudes toward the impact of English movies to improve their listening skills. They perceived the usefulness of English movie in three aspects. First English movie is considered as an authentic listening material which provides authentic exposure that helps students to understand many kinds of English accent formal and informal language. Second they applied it to improve listening skills since it enriches their vocabulary mastery identifying ability to comprehend certain topics and differentiating several accents. Last they tend to be more motivated to accessing English movie for improving their listening skills because they find it fun and are excited to see their favorite actor/actress in English movies. On the other hand a few students find the material dull to do.
