Abstract

Errors in English writing are commonly found in students rsquo writing works including Indonesian students who learn English as a foreign language (EFL). One of the important aspects of writing is the cognitive process and different students have their cognitive styles. Cognitive styles play a role in the writing performance of the students. This research aims to analyze the writing errors in the descriptive text made by seventh graders at SMPN 1 Dau Malang Regency East Java using a surface strategy based on the students rsquo cognitive styles. The method used here is the qualitative descriptive approach. A writing prompt Group Embedded Figure Test (GEFT) and interview guidelines are used as the research instruments. The present research found the most frequent error that was made by the seventh graders is omission while the least frequent error is mis-ordering. There is no significant difference between field-dependent (FD) and field-independent (FI) students since they have the same problems in English writing. This implies that English teachers have to pay more attention to the students rsquo understanding of grammatical structures since they are important in English writing. The teachers should also find an appropriate teaching strategy that makes the students enjoy learning English to decrease their carelessness and the right assessment to measure the student rsquo s abilities. Other researchers can identify the writing process of FD and FI students by doing an observation in a classroom with different research methods.
