This study aims to compare the differences between male and female students rsquo reading ability in descriptive narrative and procedure text. This study used descriptive quantitative as a design and used various item types and item content as the instrument to collect the data. This study was conducted at SMPN 1 Singosari with a total sample of 187 students which determined using non-probability purposive sampling. The study revealed that the average score of reading comprehension of SMPN 1 Singosari students was in the fair category with the mean of 59.4 for female students and lsquo poor rsquo category with the mean of 51.5 for male students. In comparing the scores of both genders in the three types of texts female students outperformed male students in reading comprehension skills. More female students scored in the upper categories than male students and fewer female students scored in the low category than male students. In addition the most difficult type of text for both genders is narrative text where the percentage of achievement in the highest category is very small compared to other categories in all types of text. The recommendation given was that English teachers could develop more challenging learning materials for female students and put more focus on developing their reading skills across all types of texts. In addition special assistance and additional exercises on narrative texts were suggested to improve their understanding
