Extensive studies have been conducted in order to ascertain potential disparities in linguistic variation between genders including in written text. It was found that there are so many differences that occur in male and female writing such as linguistic aspects writing strategies anxieties motivation and proficiency. From all aspects the researcher found that it did not examine in depth some important aspects of writing such as discourse markers (DMs) which are an important factor in determining whether the writing is good or not in term of coherence and cohesion. DMs can be utilized to enhance the flow of the segment they introduce and the prior segments based on the writer s description so that the text will be easier to comprehend. To the best of the writer s knowledge there is no definitive or clear information that males and females are different or the same in terms of using DMs while DMs are very important in determining the quality of writing. As of writing it is not much known especially related to the use of DMs. It tends not to pay attention to the issue of gender differences while in other aspects there is already information that has been reviewed by previous researchers. It is crucial to carry out this research in order to build awareness of DMs used in male and female students rsquo writing and find out the problems faced by both genders when using DMs. As expected both male and female students can have the same proficiency in writing. This current study focuses on looking at possible differences in the use of DMs by male and female students. Moreover it also explores the different problems that might be encountered by male and female high school students when using discourse markers. In giving a detailed description the most suitable research approach that can provide a clear explanation of the data is a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. This study analyzed 85 essays 39 essays written by male students and 46 essays written by female students. The essays were analyzed based on Fraser rsquo s classifications (1999 and 2010) of discourse markers. The inappropriate use of discourse markers by male and female students was analyzed by four categories of inappropriateness misuse overuse semantic incompletion and distraction. The findings of this study revealed that female students make greater use of discourse markers (DMs) than male students do. Overall the prominent DMs in the essays authored by male and female students are similar. Students both male and female had a tendency to utilize elaborative discourse markers. This indicates that they were more willing to provide additional information and examples to back up their claims. Finally both male and female students had a tendency not to use contrastive markers which are generally used to contrast ideas. Moreover it can be identified that the types of DMs used by male and female students are potentially influenced by the genre of the essays written by the students. Despite the use of DMs in male and female students rsquo essays the inappropriate use of DMs also needs attention. There are several problems with using the DMs. The problems of inaccuracy in DMs include semantic incompletion overuse misused distraction and mistranslation. The most common problem with using DMs is semantic incompletion both in male and female students. Moreover a new problem mistranslation is only found in male student essays where the students directly translate the word from L1 to L2. The suggestions proposed by this study aim to improve male and female students rsquo abilities and awareness of using appropriate DMs in their writing. The finding reveals that both of the students use a high number of DMs yet some of the sentences in the essays are semantically perplexing. The students should do some DMs exercises in order to become more acquainted with the function of DMs in the text. This type of activity is assumed to improve students rsquo ability to use appropriate DMs in the text. In addition the English teacher should encourage the students to be more concerned about the role of DMs in the text. As in this study male and female students are taught by different teachers both male and female teachers need to collaborate and discuss the best teaching practices and exercises that can help students improve their abilities in using DMs especially in writing academic essays. Therefore the results of the study are expected not only describe the used of DMs by male and female students in that boarding school but also to give the same description and raise the awareness for all boarding schools that use the same curriculum and have the same activities. This study has several limitations that should be acknowledged. First more writing sample is needed to compare detail characteristics of DMs used among the genre of essays written by male and female students. Second this research only have three writing practices due to the limitation of the time given by the school. Third this research doesn rsquo t look for the factor of the difference DMs use by male and female students. Future studies should consider to include the factor of the different DMs used by male and female students in order to obtain comprehensive findings related to the DMs. The suggestions for future researchers who have an interest in DMs study specifically gender are there are several suggestions to conduct further study including comparing the characteristics of DMs types used among the writing genres in male and female students rsquo essays comparing the DMs use between native speakers and non-native speakers based on gender conducting action research on teaching DMs for male and female students and analyzing the students rsquo and teacher s perceptions about the function and roles of DMs in academic writing.
