Abstract

The objective of the current study was to investigate English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students experience and manifest anxiety while communicating in English in different contexts. A further objective of the current study was to explain factors that are perceived as contributing to anxiety when speaking in English with strategies used to overcome this anxiety among undergraduate students at a private university in Malang. Research has shown that students lack of interest and engagement in class activities cannot be only attributed to their competency. Anxiety may also carry an influence in making students afraid to participate. If this phenomenon is not adequately addressed at this stage it could evolve into an affective filter that impedes language acquisition by discouraging the learner resulting in a fear of making mistakes and a lack of self-assurance. The current study utilized a narrative inquiry design approach. Narrative inquiry is a remarkably right approach for investigating student experiences. Other than that narrative inquiry is indicated as the most efficient approach for comprehending experiences. The research began with selecting the participants by conducting pre-observational research in speaking classes. On the basis of preliminary data five students were chosen to be the participants in the study. The following procedure is to gather the participants information through a narrative frame followed by a semi-structured interview. The study finds that students who suffer anxiety when speaking a foreign language. They presented various psychological and physiological symptoms as well as behavioral responses. In light of the situation they encounter feelings of apprehension and fear. Most interviewees expressed a prevailing belief that speaking anxiety arises from the apprehension of receiving criticism and judgment from others. The findings suggest that anxiety in the classroom can be attributed to various factors including the classroom environment learner characteristics the target language and the process of learning a foreign language. They employed five ways to alleviate the anxiety. Specifically the key sources include preparation relaxation positive thinking peer seeking and resignation. The current study recommended future research to enhance the comprehension of anxiety in speaking that is encountered by students. Even if it explains students apprehension of speaking a foreign language this study has drawbacks. The following research should focus on these concerns to enhance the depth and extensiveness of the subject. Yet the current study began with a small-scale study of anxiety in speaking a foreign language. The following research should employ a more extensive sample size in order to validate the obtained results. Furthermore most research assessed the anxiety level linked to speaking a foreign language using quantitative measures. Hence it is recommended for the upcoming research to utilize a mixed-methods method to acquire a more thorough comprehension of this issue.
