Abstract

SUMMARY Wicaksono Adianto Restu. 2022. How To Write Sound Arguments Ele Undergraduates rsquo Congitive Process In Constructing Well-Reasoned Argument In The Discussion Section. Tesis. Department of English Faculty of Letters Universitas Negeri Malang. Advisors (I) Prof. Dr. Yazid Basthomi M.A. (II) Anik Nunuk Wulyani M.Pd. Ph.D. The important of well-reasoned arguments in the research discussion is a crucial notes that affect the quality of the research article. To date the studies primarily scrutinized how undergraduates implemented Swales rsquo CARS framework across various disciplines and level. The previous studies that investigated the rhetorical structure of research discussion evidently has not paid sufficient elaboration on the quality of ELE undergraduates with Toulmin argument model as the primary framework and ELE undergraduates rsquo cognitive process as they develop the research discussion in their research articles. This study is inspired to fulfill the research gaps in the scope of research discussion development pertaining on the ELE undergraduates rsquo arguments rsquo quality in research discussion based on Toulmin rsquo s argument model and the ELE undergraduates cognitive process in constructing their arguments. This study employed descriptive qualitative approach that investigate the quality 130 ELE undergraduates rsquo research discussion. This study also gathered 103 questionnaire results and 8 interviews to investigate the cognitive process of ELE undergraduates rsquo cognitive process as they constructed their argument. The results of the study shows that the majority of ELE undergraduates produced almost-complete arguments that consist of four arguments elements namely ldquo Claim rdquo ldquo Data rdquo ldquo Warrant rdquo and ldquo Back-Up rdquo . The first three elements interestingly manifested in all 130 research discussion and serves as the main portion of discussion while ldquo Qualifier rdquo and ldquo Rebuttal rdquo elements were mostly missing. The questionnaires and interview results shows that during the writing process all ELE undergraduates successfully implemented all three cognitive writing stages planning text production and text interpretation. The findings of the study indicates that Toulmin model remains as a valid framework to implement in constructing argument in research discussion. The manifested arguments arguably able to fulfill ELE undergraduates rsquo aim which was convincing the readers that their research findings is indeed true. The cognitive stages particularly manifested in outlining and literature reviews significantly help the ELE undergraduates to construct strong and well-reasoned argument. The research findings also showcase ELE undergraduates tendency to show ldquo positive justification rdquo that disregard ldquo Rebuttal rdquo in their argument. Nevertheless their arguments arguably still able to fulfill their objective however ELE undergraduates rsquo rsquo arguments has not demonstrated their expected writing ability to construct complete arguments in their research discussion.
