Abstract

This present study attempts to investigate EFL teachers rsquo strategies in motivating low-achieving learners in online class from the perspective of English teachers and low-achieving learners. The participants of this study were twenty-five English teachers and thirty students of Insan Cendekia State Islamic Senior High School that exist in Indonesia. The data were collected through questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The result of study revealed that there are some foremost motivational teaching strategies applied by EFL teachers to deal with low-achieving learners during online class. EFL teachers applied the strategy of monitoring students rsquo activities showing the importance of English clarifying difficult topics caring about students rsquo learning progress explaining topics clearly and specifically helping student understand complex things starting the class with students rsquo prior knowledge presenting various teaching aids offering rewards and giving students enough time to practice. Among ten foremost strategies applied EFL teachers and students only had different opinion in one strategy where EFL claimed that offer rewards for participating in activities strategy was one of ten foremost strategies applied but low-achieving learners agreed that it was not that often. Low-achieving learners selected answer student rsquo s questions after class strategy instead of offer rewards for participating in activities strategy in their online class. Briefly there were no significant different result between EFL teachers rsquo and students rsquo perception in EFL teachers rsquo practice of motivating low-achieving learners found in this study. Based on the result of study some suggestion addressed to some parties EFL teachers students and further researchers. EFL teachers can consider to implement those motivational teaching strategies when they utilize online class in order to keep low-achieving learners motivated to improve their performances. Students should be reminded that no magical ways can motivate them self-motivation can do better. They need to keep in their mind that by having online class they can create their own comfort with their own pace. And for the further researchers who want to conduct the similar research field as the researcher did they need to obtain the more accurate result by collecting data from schools or institutions which fully utilize online class.
