Teachers have important roles in successful class instruction. They should have professional agencies to adjust their capacities because the era will keep changing. Teachers who successfully manifest their professional agency will promote educational reforms and school development. The study on teacher agency has elicited a fair amount of attention from many researchers around the world. However there is still a lack of study on teacher agency in the Indonesian context. Therefore the study is aimed to explore how Madrasah EFL teachers enact their agency in the development of professional identities. This research is a narrative study that involves eight EFL teachers from Madrasah around Indonesia. The data were taken from teachers rsquo stories on their struggles from the ups and downs of being Madrasah EFL teachers in the form of written and spoken. The written stories were collected by using narrative frames and the spoken narratives were obtained through in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed by using the theory proposed by Priestley et al. (2015) and elaborated into three themes the introductory period beyond the shell the journey to be professional teachers and never stop learning. The result shows that the dynamic change encountered by Madrasah EFL teachers can be categorized into three dimensions. The first dimension is the iterational dimension which refers to the struggle of Madrasah EFL teachers in shaping their agency during their initial careers. Teachers from common Madrasah have much autonomy to enact their agency compared to EFL teachers from Madrasahs with superior programs. The second is the practical evaluative dimension which explores the struggles of Madrasah EFL teachers in developing their professional identities by showing some indicators of agentic behavior that is self-efficacy professional commitment task orientation work motivation and future perspective. In addition a sense of autonomy in developing their professional expertise leads them to take various professional development programs join professional communities do reflective habits and make innovations for teaching purposes. The third is the projective dimension which refers to Madrasah EFL teachers rsquo ability to make future trajectories for better performance. They argued should be lifelong learners who always make professional changes to their teaching practices. Besides they have to engage in transformational processes by making self-evaluations to determine what professional paths should be taken throughout their career. The narrative study is not free from limitations. It challenged me to take actual conditions and tend to make the participants as champions who were successful in developing their professional identities. Besides the participants involved Madrasah EFL teachers who got scholarships from the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2019. Therefore the study cannot reflect the whole condition of Madrasah EFL teachers in Indonesia. However the study offers some recommendations for EFL teachers education practitioners policymakers and future researchers. EFL teachers need to manifest their professional agency to be the best version of EFL teachers based on their professional beliefs. The study also recommends education practitioners to provide professional communities such as teachers rsquo forums which allow all teachers from various institutions both from Madrasahs or Public schools. The study also assists the policymakers in formulating regulations for teacher professional development. The last future researchers are recommended to examine other areas of teacher agency such as autonomy affordances or the relationship between teacher and student agency. The point worth noting about this narrative study is that educational needs are changing and EFL teachers need to continuously and consistently manifest their professional agency to address these changing needs within their professional careers. When teachers have successfully exercised their agency in proper ways they will accomplish the teacher competencies based on the law of education system UU No 14 the year 2005 about teachers and lecturers i.e. the personal social pedagogical and professional competencies.
