Abstract

The importance of English cannot be denied and ignored since English is the most common language. In accordance with the English Proficiency Index result the Program for International Students Assessment (PISA) test in 2018 indicated that Indonesian students ranked 72nd out of 77th countries in the reading domain which means their status is low. Reading ability as one of the communicative skills should be emphasized. It requires to gaining knowledge and information independently. In the current situation students reading ability to understand what they have read is a valuable skill. However some EFL learners have many problems comprehending texts especially beginners. The researcher applied the Classroom Action Research (CAR) design and collaborated with the host teacher. The researcher conducted a preliminary study to identify and understand the students issues in the class before cycle one. In this phase the researcher worked with the host English teacher to examine the students test results and discuss any problems. In cycle one there were four stages Planning Implementing Observing and Reflecting. This class had 26 students including 12 male and 14 female students. Seventh-grade students were chosen because they had difficulty understanding the text s meaning and purpose related to preliminary research findings. For the criteria of success 75% of the 7J class at SMP Negeri 10 Malang should reach a score above the minimum score of 75. In the preliminary study the researcher found that there are several problems faced by the students. The students rsquo problems are (1) The lack of students achievement due to the students having low motivation in reading a text (2) they had difficulty mastering the vocabulary and (3) students are unable to understand the meaning and purpose of the text and (4) most of them could not achieve a good result in reading and their learning outcome. The observation discovered that (1) the average score for the initial test was 46.53. Five students got a score above the standard of minimum completeness. (2) Almost all the students had low motivation in reading they had difficulty understanding the text. (3) They did not know enough vocabulary. Therefore to develop the student s reading skills the teacher should apply a certain strategy to improve the student rsquo s achievement and help the students in enhancing vocabulary mastery. The more affluent students build vocabulary the better they analyze understand and comprehend the text. Identifying and understanding the meaning of words through context clues is the most effective method to increase students vocabulary and improve their reading ability. Words can have multiple meanings therefore this strategy is beneficial in inferring the correct definition from the context. The meaning of these words is assumed by the readers in order to interpret what is going on in the text. As stated by Wulandari (2017) it addresses the usefulness of employing context clues. The result demonstrates that the method helps the students improve their reading ability and vocabulary. Therefore vocabulary mastery has a significant point in understanding the sentence. Additionally the researcher used three instruments to collect the data during the implementation of the strategy. The instruments are an observation checklist field notes and a test. Observation checklist used to observe the students rsquo involvement in the class. While it supports field notes to record during the act of conducting the activities behaviours and events. In making a conclusion the researcher used a test to measure the learning progress and achievement. The criteria of success determined to investigate the students achievement. Using context clues successfully raised students reading achievement after just one cycle. The student s average score on the initial test was 46 53 below the standard score. However after applying the context clues strategy in descriptive text the reading test score increased to 77 03. During the time the strategy was being used the students improved significantly. They were often confused but then they asked the researcher during the implementation. The students can express their idea by looking at the signal words and connecting them before or after the sentence. The clues helped the students figure out what the words meant and they could guess them using synonyms and definitions of words. However the final exam was not passed by 19.24% of students. They did not achieve the standard minimum score. They achieved scores under 75. From the observation during the activity the students looked too busy with their gadgets. However the students attentiveness was generally good throughout the learning process. In conclusion a context-clues-based strategy can improve the student rsquo s reading achievement. The use of context clues could assist both the teacher and students. It trains the teacher to be more creative and selective to find a text and choose unknown words related to the student rsquo s level. Besides the teacher the students can enrich their vocabulary and understand the context of the text. The researcher found that students actively participated in the learning-teaching process using the context clues strategy. The students rsquo achievement Context clues strategy successfully enhances the seventh-grader students reading achievement. Even though the use of context clues has been proven successful in improving students rsquo reading achievement through descriptive text it was found that this research is limited in describing the students rsquo perceptions towards the strategy. therefore to support the data from the student rsquo s opinions future research should create a questionnaire or interview.
