Abstract

The Corona Virus (Covid-19) pandemic which was first discovered in China before the end of 2019 has altered people s life including the education aspect. The Minister of Education and Culture (Mendikbud) released circular letter No. 4 of 2020 concerning the Implementation of Education Policies in the Emergency period for the spread of Covid-19 in response to the impact of the appearance of this coronavirus in the field of education. The government advises suspending learning activities in schools and introducing online learning to break the virus s chain of transmission (learning from home). Teachers and students will not meet face to face or remain in the same room. Teachers and students will only be able to communicate digitally. This study used quantitative descriptive design and utilized survey as the method of gathering data. This study investigated the perception of senior high school students toward English online learning in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic based on their personalities. The students rsquo perceptions serve responses that were divided into negative and positive response toward English online learning. The subject of this research were the students from the state senior high schools in Probolinggo. There were nineteen state senior high schools in Probolinggo. The school names were put into a lottery to select the representative schools as the respondents of this research. The targeted respondents were three hundred students. Therefore seven of nineteen schools were chosen with the expectation of having fifty students from each school to meet the need of the targeted respondents. The school names were not authentically stated in this research. As an alternative the researcher named the schools from SCHOOL 1 ndash SCHOOL 7 refering to the chosen schools. The questionnaire on students rsquo perception and the students rsquo personality were made into Google Form to easily spread the questionnaire to the chosen schools. There were four hundred and eighty nine respondents of this research. It was found that three hundred and seventy seven students out of 489 gave positive responses to the use of online learning with fifty three students giving very positive responses. Negative responses were given by fifty nine students out of 489 and no student gave very negative to the implementation of online learning. In other words 77 % of students said online learning was beneficial 11 % said it was extremely beneficial and 12 % said it was detrimental and none of them stated that it was extremely detrimental. The researcher did item analysis to revel the items that had highest and lowest positive and negative responses. It was found that the item number 3 5 and 11 of the perception questionnaire that discuss about the internet connectivity variety of media usage and the chance given during the online learning received high negative responses from the respondents. Additionally since the seven schools were located in different areas including rural and mountainous area the researcher analyzed the responses based on the schools location. It was found that one of the seven schools had responded negative to the implementation of online learning. The school in fact was located in mountainous area. The personality questionnaire that was developed using the Carl Jung theory of Extroversion and Introversion revealed that the extrovert personality type dominated the results. Students from the highly extrovert and extrovert personality types made up 359 (73%) of those who answered very positive and positive to the online learning perception questionnaire. This number will rise due to the introvert personality s positive response reaching 88%. As a result just 12% of the three personality types gave negative replies. Because the extrovert personality had the most positive response this statistic can be used to determine that the students who responded positively to online learning were generally extroverted. There were some additional highlighted points by analyzing students rsquo personality on their perception toward English online learning. The extrovert students were giving high positive responses to the statement that they could share their assignments to their classmates. While the introverts personality students claimed that they could improve their reading skill better than the extrovert personality did. To put it another way students with the extrovert personality profit more from online learning than students who are introverts. Therefore if the teachers could notice the students rsquo personality the teachers could have better plan for the learning processes. The teachers could consider the students rsquo personality to make the lesson plan so that the outcome could be reached effectively.
