Advisors (I) Dr. Mirjam Anugerahwati M.A. (II) Dr. Utari Praba Astuti M.A. Keywords Students rsquo Critical Thinking Skills Teacher Beliefs Teacher Practices The urgency of teaching critical thinking skills to the students currently cannot be neglected. The teacher holds essential role to prepare them to have great soft skills for their future lives. No matter what they want to be or what discipline of knowledge they want to emphasize the ability to think critically will be beneficial for them. Hence this paper aims to dig up EFL teacher beliefs about the notion of critical thinking as well as how they promote it to the students in the classroom situation. This research focused on EFL teachers of secondary level in Indonesia particularly in Malang. A number of criteria were considered when selecting the participants. First they are teaching English on secondary level in Malang in. Second at least they have two years of teaching experience of English and have joined training/workshop to develop their professional aspect particularly in improving students rsquo critical thinking skills. In addition this study used questionnaire and interview guide as the instruments to collect the data. Based on the results of the research it showed that EFL teacher beliefs about promoting critical thinking skills are broken down into three big categories (1) the importance of teaching critical thinking skills EFL teachers have strong beliefs (85 1%) regarding the urgency of promoting critical thinking skills for the students. (2) the role of EFL teachers in promoting students rsquo critical thinking they believed that teachers have two roles in promoting students rsquo critical thinking skills (a) the role of teachers to have the ability to think critically at the very first time. (b) the role of teachers to have ability to provide various activities that can train the students to be critical thinkers. (3) the effective strategies in promoting students rsquo critical thinking skills problem-based solving minimizing the traditional way of teaching called lsquo lecturing rsquo making the teaching and learning process as student-centred rather than teacher-centred providing more activities giving students more chance to learn how to give argument or opinion toward some issues. discussion and debate. Furthermore in terms of EFL teachers rsquo practices in promoting critical thinking skills for the students in classroom situation lie down into several ways those are providing questions which can stimulate students to think critically designing the class into group work discussion to train their students to be critical thinkers asking the students to give their view or arguments toward the problems occurred in the process of learning and teaching in the classroom starting lesson to by providing spoiler for the students at the first time providing the problems that probably simple and easily found in their surroundings problem solving and discovery learning snowball throwing or shopping around providing games like puzzling and so forth.
