Tense is become one of the challenges in learning English grammar. Many students faced problems in using tenses appropriately especially in writing. Based on a preliminary study the students made errors in using tenses in writing. Apart from that the tense was taught through traditional grammar approach which focused on drills repetition and grammatical transformation. It makes students lack of practice tenses in the actual context. Hence students needed to be facilitated with contextual material. Therefore this study aimed to develop web-based media for teaching tenses based on contextual grammar. The study was conducted at one of the universities in Tanjungpinang Kepulauan Riau. The study used R amp D (Research and Development) design with the ADDIE model by Branch (2009) that consisted of several stages (1) analyzing (2) designing (3) developing (4) implementing and (5) evaluating. In the analyzing phase a questionnaire and an interview guide were used to determine the students rsquo interest. The questionnaire was administered to 60 students in the fourth semester while the interviews were distributed to the alumni and the lecturer through Google form. There were two results highlighted in the need analysis (1) media for teaching tenses needed to be improved (2) the materials should be contextual. To respond to the need analysis the materials in the product development adapted the concept of contextual grammar approach by Nunan (1998). After compiling the students rsquo needs the materials and tasks were designed and selected into the module draft. Further the module was put in the web media. The module consists of eight units with explanations and some exercises. The explanation starts with exploration an exposure is given in each unit. Then it is followed with the tasks for each unit. In the development stage the product was validated through expert validation (theoretical validation). There were three variables to be validated (1) the content in the explanations (2) the tasks and (3) the media. The validator confirmed that the product had fulfilled good validation results for the three variables. In the implementation stage the product was tried out with small-number of students to ensure the product s empirical validity. The try-out used questionnaires that also covered three variables (1) the content in the explanations (2) the tasks and (3) the media. The results of the questionnaires showed that the product had fulfilled the empirical validity for the three variables. The students gave comments and suggestions about the product. First they suggested putting the formula of each tense in the module. Then they complained that some of the instructions were confusing. Then they also complained that an error sometimes happened in the media. After revising the product the product was again tried out. On the second try-out there were no complaints related to the product. Furthermore a questionnaire was also administered to identify the product s practicality. Based on the questionnaire result the students confirmed that the contents were suitable for the students rsquo level. The web media also encouraged them to learn tenses effectively. In addition the product made teaching and learning more attractive and fun. Based on the findings web-based media for tenses based on contextual grammar gave a good result in developing students knowledge about tenses. In addition the product had some implications It gave more opportunity for the students to explore and practice the form and functions of the tenses in actual use. It also led the students to connect their knowledge of tenses in writing which may help them reduce the error of using tenses in writing.
