Students academic writing skills have always the concern of the Indonesian higher education institutions especially those that offer English language programs. A preliminary study through observation checklist and interview to few students conducted by the researcher found that sophomore university students encountered problems with academic writing skills in particular ideas development and critical thinking. Besides having discovered insufficient main materials in academic writing class the students claimed about their needs of academic writing materials Compelled by the situations this study developed an academic writing module for English Department students using a Genre-based Approach (GBA). The study was conducted at one of the state universities in North Sumatra Province Indonesia. A Research and Development (R amp D) adapting Borg and Gall rsquo s model (1983) was employed comprising six steps (1) Needs Analysis (2) Product Development (3) Expert Validation (4) Product Revision (5) Small Scale Try-Out and (6) Finalization. In the needs analysis two kinds of instruments consisting of a closed-ended questionnaire were distributed to 64 students and an interview with a lecturer was conducted. The questionnaire before being distributed was tried-out to small group of subjects comprising nine students. The critical thematic analysis was employed to analyze the teacher s response in the interview. The needs analysis results confirmed that the group of students had problems in developing ideas and implementing critical thinking in writing which were considered highly-important skills to be mastered in achieving academic writing proficiencies. The results became the foundation to determine the module s goal. The GBA was therefore selected to solve the students problems in ideas development. As the GBA does not only promote students to write text but to explore and analyze the texts production critical thinking manifests in writing. The stages of GBA employed in the module consisted of four stages (1) Building Knowledge of the Field (BKoF) (2) Modeling of the Text (MoT) (3) Joint Construction of the Text (JCOT) and (4) Independent Construction of the Text (JCOT). The module s contents cover writing theories models of texts and strategies assisting students in mastering the academic writing skills added with an academic writing style. The module was validated by two experts to maintain quality. It was revised based on the experts suggestions. After that a small-scale try-out was employed to find out its suitability for the target group of learners. In the discussion section the two experts highlighted that the module reached the five variables with very good validation results. The results referred to the contents rsquo module that could help students understand academic writing skills and enhance their critical thinking writing. Based on the try-out the study confirmed that the module encouraged students to practice writing with various writing tasks in all the GBA stages developed students ideas by constructing linguistic forms and expanding ideas and enhanced students thinking in composing academic essays. The final product of this study was designed into sixteen meetings which were in the form of writing theories writing practice and writing strategies. Furthermore future studies were recommended in such implementing a large-scale try out to discover various responses and writing proficiencies of the target user of the developed material. Besides the number of units to be tried out was also taken as this study rsquo s recommendation to find out the usefulness and the flow of the materials after being learned by the students.
