Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effects of social acceptance and bullying on English learners and how far it can reach regarding motivating or discouraging the learners from learning English which highlights the dominance of such human feelings on our lives and choices including learning new language. There is a lack of studies that discussing this topic as most of the researchers focused on the effects of those factors on education in general. Qualitative research methods were applied by making a series of interviews with 15 participants from Egypt and Indonesia and other nationalities (Madagascar- Bangladesh- China- Laos- Yemen). They range from different ages and backgrounds to investigate the effects deeper in different and varied cultural contexts. The selection of the participants was made depending on the study needs and the number of participants was limited by the time and resources. The research shows some interesting findings that bullying can stop or discourage some learners from using the language or learn it at all. And how as individuals they reacted differently to the emotions of being rejected. It was also found that all the participants showed a need to belong or a need for acceptance for different reasons that pushed them to learn the language. In addition there were no differences between the learners from the different culture contexts considering the desire to be accepted and the fear of being rejected. Their reasons to learn English was nearly the same seeking acceptance in good job with good salary study abroad travel or feel accepted among their groups and society. And some of them gave interesting answers relating their desire to learn English of being a ldquo good mother rdquo ldquo look rich rdquo ldquo look cool rdquo ldquo smarter rdquo ldquo educated rdquo and ldquo respected rdquo while ldquo Uqdat el-khawagah (obsession of all what comes from the west) rdquo and ldquo Sok Inggris rdquo was a reason to be Bullied. The findings proved a strong relationship between acceptance and learning English. The learners seek to acquire the language to be accepted from others or in a job study abroad and travel. Such great impact of a language on humans that they need it to feel acceptance comes from the domination of English on our world as a global language. The need of acceptance is a highly effective motive on the learners as showed on all the participants of the study. As for the second factor bullying that generates a feel of rejection it has a strong impact on English learners as a demotivator made the participants choose silence and stop using the language when they face such situations and one of the participants stopped learning the language completely after getting bullied by a teacher. But surprisingly the effect of acceptance is higher and more powerful than bullying that the eagerness of the learners to be accepted exceeded their fear from rejection and made them continue learning to achieve their goals.
