Abstract

This research is intended to find out the employment of Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) in improving undergraduate students rsquo ability in writing descriptive paragraphs in online learning. This study involved 29 ungergarduate students 2021 cohort. This research was carried out according to the result of the preliminary study which indicated that the students faced difficulty in writing. To overcome the problem the researcher applied Classroom Action Research in which the researcher was helped by the collaborator in planning the action by designing the lesson plan and determining the criterion of success implementing the action observing the action and reflecting the action. This study was conducted in one cycle which consisted of five meetings. The activities in the teaching-learning process employed PWIM which included eight stages in the process of teaching and learning. First the researcher uploaded discussed the material about descriptive paragraphs. Second the researcher showed a picture(s). Third the students broke down the pictures and listed the things presented on the picture(s). Fourth the students created draft sentences. Fifth the students revised and discussed the paragraph. Sixth the students edited their writing based on the grammar vocabulary and mechanics. Seventh the students re-revised and re-edited the draft. Last the students posted their final writing product. In collecting the data the researcher employed writing test scoring rubrics classroom observation checklist and field notes which had been previously validated. The students preliminary and post-action tests were intended to see students rsquo improvement in writing descriptive paragraphs. In every meeting the collaborator did classroom observation and wrote a field note to see the students rsquo participation during the classroom activities. The finding of this research indicated that the employment of PWIM can improve students rsquo ability in writing descriptive paragraphs in online learning since it has successfully fulfilled the criterion of success of this study. According to the data obtained 28 out of 29 students got or passed the passing grade 75. It means that the result of students post-action test achieved more than the criterion of success set by the researcher and the collaborator 80%. So a further cycle was not needed since the criterion of success have been achieved. Therefore for the practitioner who experiences similar issues the application of this strategy can be taken into consideration as one of the alternative ways to solve the students rsquo issues. For further research in the same realm it is suggested to employ the result of the research of this study as one of the valid references in conducting the research.
