Abstract

The academic writing issues that attributed to difficulties in developing ideas constructing grammatically correct sentences and organizing appropriate paragraphs were problems for mostly students at tertiary level. The adequate input from textbooks did not well serve for students and contributed to new learning sources issues. Thus a textbook that relevant to students needs and problems were crucially needs to be developed. Research and Development (R amp D) consisting of five steps (1) need analysis (2) product development (3) expert validation (4) product tryout and (5) evaluation were used to develop supplementary learning materials for English study program students at one of state polytechnic in Madiun. The data of students rsquo needs and problems of academic writing was explored through close ended questionnaires and semi structured interview addressed for the students and English lecturer. Then the product was designed based on Flipped Learning model as it was proved to be an appropriate learning model in learning teaching writing. The content materials consist of seven units that focus on the writing process elements of a paragraph and kinds of a paragraph completed with assessment in each of the unit. The module successfully helped students to cope with their writing issues improved their writing skill gradually and role as appropriate supplementary materials used in learning teaching of academic writing.
